Backpacks with School Supplies and Lunch for Haiti

About This Cause

In January of 2015, BHG donated Desks, Chairs, Cabinets, Bookshelves, Whiteboards, etc., to furnish Schools and Orphanages in Haiti and Jamaica. The organization that BHG chose to work with on this endeavor was "Food for the Poor". During the collection and inventory process, Peter Estrada, voiced his love for "Food for the Poor" and the work they do. Peter asked that we work on a fundraiser together to benefit these children. Unfortunately Peter lost his battle to Cancer on April 30, 2015. He would not have the opportunity to fulfill this wish. At the urging of Peter's family, we are taking on this fundraising effort here at BHG. As a result of this effort, children will be able to go to school in Haiti, that would otherwise not be able to attend school. The children of Haiti are unable to go to school unless they have their own school supplies and school backpack. This fundraising effort will raise funds so the children can have backpacks filled with school supplies, in order to go to school.

The story of the 3 orphanages and the need for school supplies, is as follows:
Orphelinat de FSUD (Fondation Sens Universel & Damabiah)
FSUD, located near the infamous “Tent City”, an extremely impoverished area which comes by its name honestly due to the lack of houses, is home to over 70 children who are seeking refuge from poverty and other traumatic situations. The orphanage also runs a school, which is the rickety structure you see in the pictures. When I visited the home, the home administrators were nervous to allow me to enter the building because I was a guest, but the children are expected to learn in this environment every day, ignoring the constant fear of collapse. This school is also open to children from the neighboring communities—no matter how severe their struggle, they still open their doors to others in need. Along one side of the school, spray painted on the rotten plywood is “In God We Trust”. It is amazing to see, despite the detrimental surroundings, that God is still present. I believe that this is what keeps the children safe as they all sit and learn within these patch-worked ruins.

Orphelinat Fernando Garcia Zalvidea – aka Orfegaza
Orfegaza is an orphanage located in Port-au-Prince, and was founded in 2010, intending to be a refuge home for children after the earthquake with the hopes of being temporary. Five years later, the children are still living without plumbing or electricity in temporary housing with cardboard walls, and temporary bathrooms that don’t flush. Their kitchen is a pot over a fire in the corner of a concrete room, and their play area is the rest of that unfinished concrete room. This place is home to 20+ children, but feels more like the Gaza Strip than a home, making its nickname more than a coincidence of abbreviation.

Centre d'Accion pour le Developpement
CAD is an orphanage located in the town of Ganthier, an hour outside of Port-au-Prince, in what feels like a desert due to the intense heat and barren surrounding land. There are over 50 children that live in this home, but the home supports over 200 children from the neighboring communities. This home is the newest home to be added to our program in Haiti. Six months ago, the children looked malnourished, unhealthy, and sad. Now, thanks to the increased support they have received from the Angels of Hope program, they look healthier, brighter, and most importantly, happier. Unfortunately, the need here is still great. Some of the children are forced to sleep in zinc structures with no electricity, where it is extremely hot, making it difficult to sleep. This home also has a school where the children get their primary education, then are able to learn technical skills, such as sewing.

The significance of this fundraiser

In memory of Peter Estrada, we are implementing this fundraiser. Peter's Birthday is September 27th, and on his birthday the children in Haiti, will all be in school, thanks to this fundraising effort in his memory.

The children in Haiti will be able to go to school, thanks to this fundraiser that will provide school supplies.

We are looking to purchase 345 backpacks for all the children that will be serviced by this school and these orphanages in Haiti. We also want to raise enough money to purchase food to feed the children while in school.

We are requesting donations in order to purchase Backpacks filled with school supplies for the children of Haiti along with fund the school lunch program.

A special account has been setup through BHG Accounting in order for all donations to go directly to a special account via Paypal. The funds will be used to purchase the backpacks filled with school supplies, through Houser Office Supply, at cost. The filled backpacks will then be given to "Food for the Poor", to distribute to the children in Haiti. If we have any funds left over from the purchase of 345 backpacks filled with school supplies, we will use the extra funds to purchase food for the children in the school. Bankers Healthcare Group, LLC, BHG, has initiated this fundraiser in Memory of Peter Estrada who lost his battle with cancer on 04/30/2015. See Peter's picture above.
