In May of 2008 my long time friend Steve Rettke was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor.
Steve was an avid runner, a cross country and track and field teammate of mine at The College at Brockport. He loved running and kept at it throughout his treatment, even competing in the 2011 Chase Corporate Challenge in Buffalo, NY. There was never a time he wasn't ready to reminisce about our college days or my current athletic endeavors.
On February 11, 2014, his 30th birthday, Steve lost his hard fought battle with cancer. Steve's strength, dedication, kindness, and friendship are an inspiration to myself and countless others.
Steve was always at the ready for a training run and was a fierce competitor. Each and every time he raced everyone knew that Steve was leaving everything he had to give on the track.
I am dedicating my marathon on May 25, 2014 in Buffalo, NY to my friend Steve Rettke. In that race, and the races leading up to it, I will be wearing a remembrance of Steve. My friend and I will be able to run a few more miles together one final time.
I am taking donations which will be donated to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center in memorial of Steve upon completion of my marathon in May. Additionally, I will also be donating a percentage of any race winnings I earn throughout the year.
