My name is Ben Hale, I am a 16 year-old American who lives in Amman, Jordan. I am currently a Life Scout in Boy Scouts of America Troop 806, where I am working on my Eagle Scout project.
In Jordan there are around one million refugees from around the Middle East and Africa, the majority of whom come from Syria. Many of these refugees fled their countries with nothing, and are not allowed to work in Jordan; however, their children are allowed to attend local public schools. Many of these refugee families do not have the means to purchase any school supplies for their children. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides some children with backpacks. However, these backpacks are boldly marked with the UNHCR logo. Unfortunately, children carrying these backpacks are at times ridiculed and targeted by bullies, which become a source of shame for children already in vulnerable positions. Sadly, some of these children end up dropping out of school because of something as seemingly inconsequential as a logo on a backpack.
For my Eagle Scout project, I am working with and NGO called Mercy Corps, to raise money to purchase school kits for refugee children in Jordan. Each school kit will consist of a backpack filled with school supplies, including notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, markers, and a calculator. The cost of each school kit is $15. Most of my fundraising is taking place in the United States. When I return to Jordan, I will work with Mercy Corps to purchase these items from a wholesale distributor, assemble the school kits, and distribute them to needy children at a large refugee camp and in public schools.
In the four years that I have lived overseas, I have come to realize how blessed we are as Americans. When we see these images on the television of people in need around the world, we wonder how we can help. Here's your chance! Please help the refugees in Jordan by donating to my Eagle Scout project. Every dollar donated will go directly to purchasing school kits. Though each kit costs $15, any amount of money is welcome.
