Seaside helping Seaside

About This Cause

Like many people in the country I donated to Hurricane Sandy relief by texting on my cell phone-yet it didn't seem to be enough. My friend Rich Digirolamo filled a bus with food donations and drove it to a local church in Rockaway Beach, NY. He mobilized friends and clients to help donate – a nice successful donation operation by a concerned citizen. I thought to myself - what could I do to help mobilize a community out here on the West Coast?

With the help of the Seaside Mayor Don Larsen, the Seaside Rotary Foundation, Seaside Chamber of Commerce, along with friends and citizens of Seaside, OR we are raising money to help build a new entrance complete with fresh landscaping and a new sign sporting their signature carousel horse (seen above) to Seaside Heights, NJ.

While FEMA, Bruce Springstein, Jon BonJovi, and so many other celebs help raise money to rebuild the boardwalk and the housing, we have a chance to help a town reclaim their spot on the coast. It's like the scene in the movie "Far and Away" where Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are racing on their horses to put the flag down. We are helping them put their flag down after Sandy's wrath

You get the satisfaction of knowing that your tax deductible donation is going directly to the Mayor of Seaside Heights to help bring more joy back to their town.

Like many transplanted NYers who grown up on East Coast beaches when I watched the videos of the roller coaster in the ocean, the boardwalk obliterated and all the devastation on Eastern coastline, it hit home.

Both coasts are feeling the results of global warming.

Our Oregon and Washington coastline is still seeing the devastation from the Japan Tsunami on our shores with the second dock having arrived on the Washington Coast this past month.

My parents now live in Seaside, OR where I spend a good part of my year when I am not touring. Last year I drove through the mountains 90 min. at 4am to help them evacuate after the huge Japan Earthquake and impending Tsunami on their street. The stress to evacuate amidst the Tsunami sirens was intense but we had the luxury of time. My parents were moving along well, the dog food was packed with our 5 dogs in the cars, and mom was ushering my dad to move faster. We got out early and were lucky as it turned out to be a long wait watching the ocean from a cliff evacuation spot 500 feet up the hill on a bluff.

Before that in 2007 Seaside was hit by a powerful hurricane. While no lives were lost, the damage was severe to the town businesses, forest, roads and the power was out for weeks. Some forests are still recovering.

We may be almost 3,000 miles away but we are so similar in our resiliency! Oregon know what it is to have a disaster and connecting 2 Seaside towns from coast to coast by reaching out to help them rebuild something was my initial goal.

Seaside, OR is a city of over 6,000 people that swells to over 50,000 in the summer much like Seaside Heights NJ whose population was 4500 and swells to over 65,000.

Like Seaside Heights, NJ, Seaside, OR has a strong Rotary Club of local businesses, a carousel, a big arcade and many restaurants, and shops. We even have a promenade that people love to run, walk their dogs and watch the waves from. There are parades through town we all love and look forward to. Our community loves our traditional celebrations.

Seaside Heights needs a lot of help to get all of that back.

I'm a motivational humorist who grew up on the East Coast. My parents now live in Seaside, OR and we all grew up in NY enjoying our time at the shore both in NY and the Jersey Shore.

Both Seasides have heart that bring so much joy to families and communities. I'm all about finding and sharing happiness in the world through the chaos...
Seaside, OR was pummeled by a hurricane in the past 5 years and this time it was NJ so I wanted to connect the two by reaching out!

I contacted both mayors in Seaside, OR and Seaside Heights, NJ and told them I wanted to do a fundraiser on the West Coast to help the East Coast.

In the process, I've made some nice new friends, received the generous support of the Seaside Rotary Foundation, the Sunset Empire Park district and have the honor and opportunity to help a town directly who earns 75% of their incomes from their Boardwalk and businesses.

Please help the us, build a new entrance to Seaside Heights, NJ while FEMA, Bruce, BonJovi, and countless celebrities help rebuild housing and the boardwalk!
