About This Cause

Funding for Christopher Phillips - Please use Paypal if you can.

•Who are we hosting the fundraiser for?

Christopher Phillips is married to Jenny and they have a beautiful daughter, Emily. Their home is in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

On 11/4/15 Chris was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). This is a very serious and aggressive cancer that affects the formation of blood cells in the bone marrow.

One bright spot is that there is an effective drug to combat the form of Leukemia that Chris has, called Gleevec or Imatinib. This can be included with the standard regimen of chemotherapy given to ALL patients.

The photo shown is Chris with Emily, just weeks before the diagnosis.

•Who is Christopher Phillips?

If you grow Capsicums, chillis or hot peppers, you will have already grown strains introduced to the hobby by Chris. Imagine if Raiders of the Lost Ark was actually about finding new hot peppers. I’m sure the movie would star Christopher Phillips in the role of Michigan Jones (he`s not from Indiana). I remember him telling me about the time he wrote more than 50 emails over a period of 2 years to someone in the Caribbean who had a strain of hot pepper he was interested in. And got the same back. That`s the thing, he makes contact with people from all over the world in an enthusiastic, excited, infectious way. The contacts quickly become friends, then deeper than just friends, they are co-conspirators. He has a knack with people and woos them with his knowledge, enthusiasm and plain old-fashioned goodness. The seeds he finds and grows soon become available to anyone who asks for them, for free. One of his most recent exploits brought us the Cappuccino Tepin from Mexico, so if you are growing that, think of Chris. Then think of a guy in Michigan trying to figure out what a “Gringo” is. Did I mention he doesn`t speak Spanish?

It has meant a great deal to Chris to make connections with real people, all around the world and from many cultures. People that share his passion for hot peppers. It has also meant a great deal to Chris to share those finds with as many people possible.

Is he obsessed? You bet he is. And he is very proud of it! Maybe a little too proud :-).

These are some of the strains Chris has been instrumental in introducing to the rest of us. Bih Jolokia, a number of district-specific Bhut Jolokias, Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend (TSMB or Moruga Scorpion), 7-pot Red SR, 7-pot SR Trinidad long, 7-pot Congo SR, Yellow CARDI Scorpions, 7-pot Douglah and many, many others.

•What exactly are the medical and other expenses?

Medical costs and the costs for travel to medical appointments are being sought in this campaign, plus financial aid to the family during this time. The diagnosis of ALL also put a severe strain on the family`s finances and leaves them unable to cope with the very real and very high expenses of Leukemia treatment. Chris` Wife, Jenny, has some health insurance via her job, but it is nowhere near enough. Gleevec alone can cost as much as $105,000 per year.

In the United States the costs associated with the types of treatment Chris is receiving can be astonishingly high. Seeing a doctor 3 times per week can lead to out of pocket expenses of at least $50 per visit. Drug costs also have a portion the patient is required to pay, as do stays in hospital. These are known as co-pays and are imposed by the insurance companies. Travel to and from the appointments creates issues where taxi services are often the only option, as Chris` Wife Jenny has a job hat is absolutely essential to the family.

ALL is a disease that requires long term, very intensive treatment. It usually lasts just over 3 years in length. This means that the expenses associated with treatment are going to be around for a long time.

In many cases of ALL a bone marrow transplant is often the required and necessary treatment. This procedure can cost half a million dollars if a matching donor is found. Samples have been submitted and the search for a donor is underway.

•When is the money needed by?

Christopher is in Hospital right now and began receiving chemotherapy on 11/6/15. The situation requires urgent attention, as the bills are piling up as you read this.

•Do you have any major donors?

To date we have offers of financial help from Puckerbutt Pepper Company, USA, Pepperfriends, Italy and Refining Fire Chillis, USA. We are actively seeking many more commercial partners and will update this as we receive further offers of financial help.

•Where is the medical treatment taking place?

Chris entered Troy Beaumont Hospital, in Troy, Michigan, on 11/6/15 and began chemotherapy the same day. He is expected to be there at least 2 weeks, but in all likelihood it will be longer than that. The extent of the hospital stay is dependent on the doctor`s assessment of Chris` progress.

•What are the risks to the patient if they are not treated?

Quite literally this is a fight for Chris` life. If Chris received no treatment, his lifespan would be a matter of months. With treatment things are far more hopeful. Up to 90% of people with ALL that receive chemotherapy go into remission within 6 months. Remission is the state where no cancer cells can be detected, but it does not mean there are no cancer cells. ALL can come back after a period of remission and then requires further treatment similar to the initial treatment. Bone marrow transplants are also a common treatment option and they come with new life or death risks.

•How will the money be used if the goal is met?

All the money raised during this campaign will go to Christopher Phillips’ family in order to pay for Medical expenses, travel expenses to and from doctor`s appointments and any unexpected costs associated with the Leukemia treatments prescribed by Chris` doctors. Any excess funds will be donated to the Children`s Cancer charity http://www.specialdays.org.
