About This Cause

For those that were fortunate enough to know him, Duane Sewell was instantly one of the kindest and most gracious people you knew from the moment you met him. His impact was immediate when he flashed his ever-present smile. Duane combined the qualities of compassion and humility with unbounded intellect and a quiet modesty. Each of these qualities is rare. Duane possessed all of them in great abundance. Duane led an exemplary life as a friend, father, husband and physician. His passing in November 2011 was a tragic loss for anyone whose life he touched. A scholarship has been established in the memory of Duane Anthony Sewell at his alma mater, Abington (PA) High School. This scholarship will annually grant funds to a deserving graduating senior at Abington High who is intending to go to college to study to become a doctor. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds so that this scholarship can be granted each year for many years to come. This will help perpetuate Duane's memory in 2 ways. It will provide financial assistance to college-bound high school seniors who are interested in studying medicine. It will also provide the opportunity for these students to learn about Duane and his legacy, and perhaps provide inspiration for one of these students to one day play a role in making a research discovery towards a cure for gastric cancer, another form of cancer, or to make a contribution in Duane's field of otolaryngology. Please contribute to the Duane Anthony Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund. Whether you were close to Duane or just knew him casually, please consider giving. Your contribution will help preserve Duane's memory, and provide financial assistance to college-bound students desiring to enter the medical field. Our objective is for this scholarship to become substantial enough that it will outlast all of us and that it may help result in one or more of its recipients making a meaningful contribution in the medical field one day.

You may contribute using credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express), in which case a small credit card processing fee (about 3%) is added. If you prefer to send a check (no fee), please send to: Michael Block, 43722 Trillium Drive. Sterling Heights, MI 48314. Make payable to: Abington Senior High School (please write - Duane Sewell Memorial Scholarship on the memo line). Thank you for supporting this worthy cause in memory of a special person.

Giovanna has an exceptional record of achievement within an arduous curriculum. Giovanna loves to learn, she approaches every one of her courses with optimism and energy. She is currently enrolled in a rigorous curriculum consisting of three Advanced Placement courses, AP United States Government and Politics, AP Statistics, and AP Biology. With effective study strategies and impeccable work ethic Giovanna has earned an astounding 4.06 grade point average and is ranked 72nd out of 584 students. Last year while Giovanna was taking AP Psychology she organized a study group with a few of her friends. They went to the local library and reserved a meeting room where they would work through the curriculum. Their dedication helped Giovanna earn a 4 on the AP Psychology exam. Giovanna is committed to taking demanding courses inside and outside of school to prepare herself for the rigors of college but mainly for the sheer purpose of personal and academic enrichment. Outside of the classroom Giovanna is extremely active in a variety of different clubs and activities. Giovanna is the vice president of the Garden Club. With Giovanna’s help The Garden Club has been recognized at the Philadelphia Flower Show for the past two years. Giovanna is also on the executive board of student council where she plays an active role in the planning and organizing of school events. In addition, Giovanna is a member of the Key Club, ACT and Mini-Thon. Giovanna’s service to the community did not go unnoticed; not only did she earn the respect of her club sponsors and peers she also earned the President’s Award for Service. Outside of school, Giovanna dances and has since she was a little girl. Now she helps out with the little dancers as a junior instructor. Additionally, for the past three years Giovanna has held a part time job at the local diner. Giovanna is a superior student who has contributed in many ways to the community. She has earned the respect of her teachers and peers based on her integrity, creativity, sincerity of purpose, and achievement."

We are pleased to announce that we will MATCH ALL DONATIONS made between now and 12/31/16, up to a total of $2,000. Please make your donation before the end of 2016. Instructions are shown above. . . Now about the most recent recipient: For 2016, the Duane A. Sewell Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Chris Dragomir. Following are a few notes about Chris from his guidance counselor: "Chris is currently the highest achieving student in his class and his rank at the top clearly demonstrates this accolade. He has earned an “A” average in every single Honors and Advanced Placement class he has ever taken. His curriculum is packed and he has never taken a lunch period rather he eats on the run as learning for him takes precedence. We have an eight period day and as a junior, Chris completed eight Honors and Advanced Placement courses overlapping a few core periods to make it fit. He then spent time with the teachers to make up for missed time both before and after school. His efforts were amazing and he managed to end the year with academic perfection. His ability in the classroom is truly astonishing and is matched only by his ability to organize, prioritize and accomplish his tasks. Chris has also embedded himself into the school community participating in numerous clubs and activities. He is a tutor for the National Honor Society for which I have already witnessed him supporting a student in the library during an ounce of his free time this year. He is a valuable member of the math club, science club and has won awards as a member of the Science Olympiad. He has been a member of our Swim team and currently is in his fourth season on our boy’s tennis team. He is a congressional silver medal winner devoting countless hours of service to our community and his service will continue this year as well. To top it all off, Chris, in his vacation time is a certified scuba diver! Chris will be studying biology/pre-med at Princeton in the Fall."
