On Monday February 10, while helping a friend install hardwood flooring, our friend Jeffrey Kish had an unfortunate accident with a table saw and severely injured two of the fingers on his left hand. He cut a tendon and several nerves in his index finger as well as a nerve in his middle finger, and requires immediate surgery to reattach them. Without the surgery, it will be impossible for him to regain normal or close to normal use of his hand.
The elimination of his full-time job in December of 2012—combined with the current state of the job market—has made it impossible for him to secure steady work that would afford him medical benefits. We have created this site because so many of his amazing friends and family have contacted us asking how they can help defray some of his costs.
His surgery is scheduled for today, Wednesday February 19th and will be performed by Dr. Salvatore Lenzo at Mount Sinai Beth Israel ambulatory center in Union Square. Dr. Lenzo's office has been so helpful and have worked out a special rate for him with the hospital and anesthesiology group. In addition to the surgery, he will need to put in a lot of work with a physical therapist to rehabilitate his finger in order to regain sensation and mobility.
Any help you could provide towards the surgery expenses or his rehabilitation expenses would be so appreciated. Some will donate less, some will donate more, but every single dollar counts and will make all the difference towards his recovery—both physical and financial.
Where your donation will go:
Feb 10 • Emergency room triage, sutures, x-rays $1500
Feb 19 • Hand surgeon, splints, follow up visits $3850
Feb 19 • Anesthesiologist $1500
Feb 19 • Beth Israel Hospital $3850
Future • Physical therapy and rehabilitation, out-of-pocket medications
About DonationTo.com:
When we were launching this fundraising effort, we looked into many services, aiming for one that is transparent, that would make every dollar contributed count, that would accept multiple forms of payment, and that would make funds available as close to instantly as possible. DonationTo.com allows every dollar contributed to go directly to Kish's expenses, with all of the administrative fees paid for by us so that there is no percentage deducted (other than the standard PayPal fees), as is the case on many fund-raising sites. Also, if you prefer to keep your donation anonymous, there is an option to do so on the donation page.
If you prefer to donate directly and not through this site:
Email us at friendsofjeffreykish@gmail.com and we will provide a physical mailing address.
A thank you gift from Kish:
He has incredible taste in music and loves nothing more than DJing on a road trip or making a party playlist—so all who donate will receive a link to download three-plus hours of music specially curated by Kish to thank everyone for their support.
::UPDATE Wed Feb 19th::
Jeff just got out of surgery. The doctor seemed optimistic about the success of the surgery but would reevaluate at the follow-up visit in 2 weeks. He was able to reattach the tendon and nerve in the index finger and the nerve in the middle finger. Right now the priority for Jeff is to heal—and the next step is the physical therapy, which will begin in 4 weeks. We are all, most especially Jeff, overwhelmed with the amount of support you all have given. We never would have dreamed to reach our goal in the first 24 hours. The campaign is running through March 10th (the one month anniversary of the accident). Any donations received above the goal will go towards Jeff's rehabilitation and any unforeseen medical expenses. You are all amazing people. We will continue to post updates on his condition as time goes on so please feel free to check back often. xo
ps. Jeff's mix will be going out to everyone who donated by the end of the week (as soon as he stops obsessing over the order of the songs).
::UPDATE Wed Feb 22nd::
The link to the mix has been sent out. Please reach out to friendsofjeffreykish@gmail.com if you haven't received your email by the end of today. We were having some technical difficulties, so apologies if you got two!
::UPDATE Thu Nov 13::
Jeff had a third surgery on his finger yesterday. The scar tissue release surgery back in June was a step in the right direction, but he still requires further work to get the tendon gliding properly. He goes for a follow-up and physical therapy tomorrow and we will know more about the success of yesterday's operation at that point. Hopefully we'll have a bigger update to share with you in the coming weeks!

a left handed fishing rod will be waiting this summer!!
