UPDATE ON THE KIDS
====================
Since I missed the sub-3 goal, the total raised came to about $2200. This is enough to fund a school for a year. If I commit to $2k a year for 2 years, then PSDI will start a new school. SO...I'm leaning towards making the commitment and we will do this again next spring. It will be pretty cool to create a new school and help about 30 kids get into the school system.

====================
RESULTS UPDATE
====================
...no Sub 3 for me though I had reason to be happy.

I took 3rd overall. First time on a podium for anything! Only took 50 years.

Time: 3:00:43 - about 1 minute faster than last year, which was a PR.

My tale of woe:
It happened by surprise at the end. For the last 4 miles I was *sure* I was on pace for 2:58-2:59, because my GPS watch was clicking the miles 0.4 miles behind the mile markers by the end (gradually increasing). So I was going to hit the finish line at 25.8 on my watch. But nothing doing, these low-budget race organizers just got the markers in the wrong places and the final distance on my GPS watch was 26.07. There's your 2 minutes. That said, I don't think I had the extra 43 seconds in me by then. Got through leg cramps at mile 22 (may have been saved by downing a cup of electrolytes at an aid station) but before that I had been in "stop and stretch every 1/4 mile" mode for a bit. Thought I was dead, but then somehow the last 4 miles just worked. Just not quite fast enough. Plus I missed the chute in a crowd of Santa Cruz beach traffic, but that was probably <10 seconds delay.

And so, there is reason to fight another year.

ABOUT THE CHARITY
Partners In Sustainable Development, http://www.psdintl.org/

My CEO Joe Nettemeyer, and my company, Valin, have been supporting a special, tiny little charity started in Bangladesh by one of Joe's former high school teachers. On a budget of a few hundred thousand dollars a year, PSDI helps the poorest of poor children get into the government school system - which requires a test to get in - by giving them a free 2-year education in tiny 30-person schools.

Check out the photos of the schools - pretty amazing.

MY MARATHON HISTORY
I have been running marathons since 2011, and progressively faster each year...but have never broken 3 hours (best = 3:01:44, last year in Surfer's Path). I decided to turn this year's race into a fundraiser, so that the kids can benefit from all my hard work, and YOU can put a bit of pressure on ME to go a little faster this year.
2011: Morgan Hill, 3:44 (4 weeks on crutches, hip ligament tear)
2012: Morgan Hill. 3:29
2013: Morgan Hill, 3:13 (see photo, crutches in the car...couple of days, shinsplints)
2014: Took a break, studied "Chi Running"
2015: Portland, 3:11, OK after
2016: Santa Cruz Surfer's Path, 3:01, OK after
2017: Santa Cruz Surfer's Path...

Results from last year are here: (sorry, you have to copy and paste the link. DonationTo is apparently not so swift with the HTML)

    Race Day! The good news: I placed 3rd overall & beat my PR, continuing the streak - 6 marathons, every one a PR The bad news: I missed my sub-3 goal by 44 seconds. Time 3:00:43 Not for lack of motivation - thank you all for your support and for providing the extra "kick" with the Challenges.

    OK, now we are getting somewhere...over $4000 has been pledged, but I will have to run really fast to get it. Some creative algorithms submitted. Thank you guys!! Running update: Quick 10 miler this morning, 68 minutes, or 6:48/mile. 5 seconds faster than 3 hour marathon time. BUT...it's miles 21-26 I'm concerned about. People call the last 6 miles the "second half."
