On 11th March 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's Pacific coast.
Over 19,000 people were either killed or listed missing in the ensuing tsunami, which also destroyed or damaged over 1 million buildings, including the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactor, leading to radiation leaks that resulted in a 20km exclusion zone that is still in place today.
As at 1st January 2013, 305,000 people are still homeless.
Almost 7,000 elderly residents of Minamisoma, Fukushima, are living in the temporary shelters and have no income, having previously farmed the land within the exclusion zone or fished the seas. Almost two years after the earthquake they are struggling to purchase food and water.
The Save Minamisoma Project (http://www.saveminamisoma.org/) was set up by a group of volunteers in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, with 100% of donations received being used to purchase food and water for local residents. Every two weeks, supplies are purchased and distributed amongst those who need it the most.
On 19th April 2013, 9 Tokyo Brits (www.TokyoBrits.com) will put down their beers, hold in their stomachs, clad themselves in lycra and cycle 300km from Tokyo to Minamisoma in 3 days, aiming to raise at least ¥1,000,000 (USD$11,000) to support the Save Minamisoma Project. We will put our padded shorts to the test in what for a group of 40-something MAMIL's (Google it!) is akin to climbing Mount Everest without oxygen!
To help us towards our target of ¥1,000,000 / USD$11,000, we would appreciate any donation, no matter how big or how small. All of the money donated to the Save Minamisoma project will be used to purchase food and water.
On behalf of all the Tokyo Brits who are riding to Minamisoma, and the residents of Minamisoma themselves, we thank you very much for your donation.
