Kiara 4 Mayo Clinic
The O’Keefe family has faced a series of medical issues since late 2012, including both daughters being in and out of the hospital and their father needing surgery for prostate cancer. However, after enduring several different medical procedures, the family was able to receive a definitive diagnosis for both girls, and their father’s surgery was a success. Unfortunately, the cost of receiving the proper medical treatment for one of Kiara’s illnesses was denied by the family’s insurance company. Therefore, they decided to create a medical crowdfunding page in the hopes of collecting enough online donations to pay for the required $35,000 down payment to enable Kiara to begin receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic.
After making the decision to use DonationTo as their crowdfunding partner, the O’Keefe family began harnessing the power of the Internet in order to spread the word. Fortunately, they were able to collect more than $16,000, and this made it possible for them to move forward with Kiara’s appointment at the Mayo Clinic. As an added bonus, using one of our paid programs allowed the family to save more than $600. The treatment that Kiara received for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) has allowed her to remove her feeding tube for the first time in more than nine months, and she now has a chance at living a normal life thanks to everyone who made a donation.
The Mayo Clinic
Patients who are able to take advantage of the medical advances that are being made at the Mayo Clinic are also participating in the largest not-for-profit medical facility in the world. In other words, the primary purpose of the Mayo Clinic is to research difficult illnesses in order to find new solutions. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic does not add exorbitant fees to their bills in order to make a profit. However, it is still expensive to receive treatment for diseases such as POTS because the necessary medical treatments cost a lot of money to perform.
Sadly, Kiara is battling several medical conditions in addition to POTS. For example, both she and her sister were diagnosed with celiac disease. This medical condition requires the patient to avoid eating gluten. Unfortunately, gluten is a common protein that is found in anything that is made with rye, barley and wheat. However, many restaurants and food manufacturers have started offering alternative options for people who suffer from celiac disease. People who have this condition will often experience several different symptoms, including joint pain, anemia, fatigue, headaches, skin rash, heartburn, acid reflux, dental enamel damage, spleen issues, loss of bone density, tingling and numbness in their hands and feet and balance issues. If the patient does not alter their diet to remove their exposure to gluten, they will eventually experience malabsorption.
Using Comments to Offer Support
DonationTo understands that dealing with a serious medical condition will take a financial and emotional toll on the patient and their loved ones. Therefore, we have a comments feature that will allow your donors to leave words of support along with their financial contribution. We believe that this has given an important level of comfort to each person who has used our platform, and we are pleased to host these comments. For example, Bill and Cathy Melson decided to leave a comment along with their donation of $100.
“Sending all our love and prayers to Kiara, Kylie and the O’Keefe family. Your family has given so much to the community, it’s time to pay forward. We love you. The Melson Family.”
This comment highlights one of the many reasons that people should support this cause, and it also lets the O’Keefe family know that there are several people who are rooting for them during this difficult time.
As previously mentioned, Kiara has a wide range of different illnesses that she is battling. Hashimoto’s disease is also on her list of medical complications, and it has a negative impact on her thyroid. This illness is accompanied by a diverse list of symptoms that could easily be caused by several other medical issues. Because of this, it is often difficult for patients to receive a quick and accurate diagnosis. However, anyone who has several of the symptoms should definitely explore the possibility that they have this medical condition. The most common issues are constipation, unexplained weight gain, fatigue, a puffy face, increased sensitivity to cold, muscle weakness, depression and an elevated cholesterol level. Each of these symptoms can cause the patient to experience distress, especially when they are combined with several other serious medical conditions.
Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy
The other medical condition that Kiara is dealing with is reflex neurovascular dystrophy (RND). This painful disease robs the patient’s skin, bones and muscles of the proper amount of oxygen. RND affects pediatric patients, and it is much more common among girls. In fact, 80 percent of all RND cases are diagnosed in female patients who are under the age of 18. In some rare cases, RND will cause the patient to suffer from nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, Kiara ended up dealing with this complication, and it made it very difficult for her to live a normal life.
RND can be caused by a variety of different things, including arthritis. Additionally, the condition is often greatly exacerbated by stress, and this most likely caused Kiara to experience more severe symptoms than the typical RND patient. After all, Kiara has multiple serious medical conditions, and she was dealing with the stress of knowing that her sister and father were also battling several health issues.
Kiara O’Keefe’s Facebook Page
Although some of the information that is posted on Kiara’s Facebook page is not visible to the general public, her family did make the decision to make certain things available to anyone with a Facebook account. This is a good idea for anyone who is trying to raise money online because it helps keep all of your supporters in the loop. After all, there are likely to be some donors who are not personally connected to you, but you should still encourage them to spread the word via social media. Therefore, sharing medical updates and photos with the entire Facebook community is one of the best ways to capture the attention of a wider audience. Because of this, DonationTo recommends launching a Facebook page specifically for the purpose of communicating with people outside of your personal social media network.
Kiara’s Vimeo Video
Relying on a feeding tube for more than nine months was very depressing for Kiara, so she was overjoyed when her doctor at the Mayo Clinic said that she could finally remove it. The O’Keefe family decided to take a video of this momentous occasion, and Kiara was allowed to remove the tube for herself. After the video was taken, the O’Keefe family posted it on Vimeo so that all of Kiara’s supporters could share the moment with her. Additionally, the family shared the link to the video via Kiara’s Facebook page to help spread the word about her good news.
Dealing with even one serious medical condition can be very cost prohibitive. Therefore, it was very difficult for the O’Keefe family to keep their finances in line while they were dealing with three people who had a variety of illnesses, including celiac disease, POTS, Hashimoto’s disease, RND and prostate cancer. Although they were able to rely on their insurance to take care of several of these issues, Kiara’s necessary POTS treatment at the Mayo Clinic required an out-of-pocket payment of $35,000. To help gather enough money to move forward, the family made the decision to utilize DonationTo as their medical crowdfunding host.
