Master Sergeant Thomas Saunders’ Story

Master Sergeant Thomas Saunders was a member of the U.S. Marines from June 1999 until his death on March 11, 2015. Master Sergeant Saunders participated in numerous campaigns throughout his military career, including Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Dynamic Response. Although he was deployed several times and could have chosen to stop serving his country and return to civilian life, Master Sergeant Saunders was committed to doing everything that he could to support the U.S. Marines and his fellow countrymen.

During Master Sergeant Saunders’ career, he earned 13 medals. Unfortunately, this decorated Marine lost his life while training Infantry Marines. According to NBC12, the Master Sergeant was killed during a helicopter accident, and he is survived by his wife and young son.

In response to this loss, members of Master Sergeant Saunders’ former platoon combined forces with the non-profit Fallen Not Forgotten to raise money for the family. The ultimate goal is to provide necessary financial assistance for the Master Sergeant’s son. Every donation will eventually be used for the toddler’s post-secondary educational needs such as tuition, books and boarding.

The Live in the Mud campaign was launched with the ambitious goal of raising $10,000. As of June 12, the fundraiser is only $75 away from meeting this goal, which means that there will be a lot of money accruing interest for Master Sergeant Saunders’ son.

Contributors can also make a big difference in the total amount that is donated to the young boy’s future needs by opting to pay for the small processing fee that is attached to each contribution. When this fee is covered, the campaign receives 100 percent of the money that has been donated online. This is important for any fundraiser, especially because it makes the process of hitting the goal a little easier.

Showing Support via Comments

Financial assistance can be critical when someone passes away unexpectedly, but it is also vital to remember that close friends and family will need emotional support. At DonationTo, we recognize that fundraising can help fill both of these needs. Therefore, we have attached a comments section to every crowdfunding page, and each donor is encouraged to post a few kind words.

This particular campaign captured a lot of attention from people who are not directly affiliated with the family due to the Master Sergeant’s military service. Numerous people left comments thanking him for serving the country, including the thoughtful words that were posted by Teresa Throssell:

“Thank you for your service and for paying the ultimate price to keep the U.S. a free country. Many blessings to your family.”

Comments of this nature can go a long way toward helping family members feel comforted during their time of need. DonationTo preserves indefinitely all of these comments and everything else that is posted to the fundraising page so that family and friends can derive solace from the memories and well wishes that donors share.

Online fundraising via DonationTo is an effective and easy way to collect money for a wide variety of causes, including a memorial campaign. Master Sergeant Thomas Saunders’ former platoon demonstrated how beneficial an online campaign can be when they raised almost $10,000 to help fund the fallen Marine’s son with his future educational needs.

Tools such as one-click emailing and social networking integration make it easy to raise awareness of a crowdfunding campaign, and your donors will also be able to choose between PayPal and WePay as their payment processing site. These combined features help simplify the fundraising process, which will enable you to focus on reaching your goal.
