The Book on Fundraising was created by the team at DonationTo.com. Today we announce The Book on Fundraising available 100% for free, in blog form. As the months progress we will work quickly to make these pages available on our blog - DonationTalk.com. Below is Chapter 6 – Creating a Fundraising Video – This is a key element to know as you start any type of fundraising!
Creating a Fundraising Video
Putting a video on your fundraising page is incredibly valuable for conveying a vibrant and engaging summary about your cause. The task might seem intimidating but it is the fastest way to get the attention of potential supporters. How do you create a compelling fundraising video?
First, remember to stick to the basics when writing your video’s script. Try to keep your video concise, simple, and informative. Provide all the essential information we explain in the previous chapter and say it with a smile!
If this is your first video, don’t expect perfection. The idea here is to get in front of your audience using more engaging, rich media. As time progresses, your videos will get better, but you will have no way of improving without creating your first video!
The best way to open your video is an introduction of some sort. Briefly touch on your background, explain your relationship with your cause, and mention any other relevant information about you: the How, Why, Who, and When of your cause.
Next, provide an introduction to your cause, including a short summary of its history. Remember that you’re telling a story here, not teaching a lesson. Keep it interesting and emotionally engaging!
Once you have explained the purpose of your cause, don’t forget to highlight your fundraising goals. Tell your audience how much you’re trying to raise, by what point in time you’re trying to raise it, and what the money will be used for. Be specific here — donors like to know exactly where their money is going.
If you can, do your best to create a sense of urgency about your fundraising goals. You can do this by explaining what will happen if you reach your goal in time, and what will happen if you don’t.
Finally, wrap your video up with a sincere “thank you” to your audience. By sitting through your video, your viewers are already giving you one of their most precious assets: their time. Don’t forget to thank them for their attention, and kindly ask them to spread the word.
