Imagine being a small business owner, supporting yourself and your family on a modest income. Although you work long hours every day with no insurance, health coverage, or guaranteed salary, your customers are regular, you and your family's needs are met, and that beautiful smile rarley leaves your face.

Until one day, mid monsoon season, when a temporary dam protecting your city from a gushing, over-capacity river, comes crumbling down. Within just a few hours, your city is under a few metres of water and you and everyone you know is rushing to save their homes and their livelihoods. No matter how quickly you work, only so much can be loaded on to boats, bathtubs and bookshelves to be rowed to safety.

Then, after weeks of living in an evacuee camp with thousands of others, waiting out long days of boredom and helplessness, you can finally return home. But home isn't what you remember. The waters peaked at over 3 meters so the first floor of your home and business welcomes you with unbearable sights and smells of mold and sewage, seeped in every last corner of everything you own. You've had no income for the past month and cannot earn again until you've paid thousands of baht for repairs. You wonder how long it will take for you to get back on your feet again...

This is the devastating reality not just of random faces on the news, but of our yoga and taekwondo instructor, our laundry lady and her husband, our fruit smoothie vendor and his mother, and so many others who have made our time in Nakhon Sawan such a wonderful experience. Please help them by giving their homes and businesses a jumpstart towards recovery. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Claire Vandewalle, Nicola Gurney, and Justin Bartlett
