University of the Ozarks is a private, Presbyterian-related liberal arts college. It traces its origins back to 1834 and is the oldest institution of higher education in the Arkansas/Oklahoma territory. Ozarks challenges its students to grow intellectually, culturally, socially, and spiritually, and is committed to providing students of all socioeconomic backgrounds with the tools necessary to succeed in life. The University features a history of many "firsts." It was the first co-educational school west of the Mississippi River, the first college in Arkansas to graduate a woman (1872), the site of the first accredited pharmacy school in the state of Arkansas (1946), the first historically white college in Arkansas to graduate an African-American student (1959), and the first institution of higher education in the United States to provide support to students with learning disabilities (1971). At the heart of Ozarks' mission is the commitment "to provide the best education possible for each student every time."
