Mission: California State University, Bakersfield is a comprehensive public university committed to offering excellent undergraduate and graduate programs that advance the intellectual and personal development of its students. The University collaborates with partners in the community to increase the region's overall educational attainment, enhance its quality of life and support its economic development.
- Since its opening 40 years ago, two strong traditions have emerged at CSUB: a highly personalized learning environment and an extraordinary level of student transformation. As the only four year degree granting public institution of higher education within a 100 mile radius, the mission of CSUB is to offer excellent educational programs that advance the intellectual and personal development of its students. An emphasis on student learning is enhanced by a commitment to scholarship, diversity, service, global awareness and life-long learning. The University collaborates with partners in the community to increase the region's overall educational attainment, enhance its quality of life, and support its economic development. The university is also committed to enhancing the economic and social well-being of the region we serve, which includes Kern, Tulare, Inyo, and Mono Counties, along with parts of Los Angeles and Kings County. -When CSUB students learn how to successfully negotiate their experience at the university, they achieve not only their desired degrees and certificates, but an extraordinary opportunity for social transformation. CSUB enrolls nearly 8,000 students, a striking 60% of whom are first generation students, e.g. students whose parents have never completed a four year college degree. Approximately 80% of all students receive financial aid. CSUB is also a designated Hispanic Serving Institution. Students of Hispanic/Latino background represent the largest racial/ethnic group on campus (comprising 46% of the overall student population), followed by Caucasian/White students (27%), African American/Black students (7%), Asian/Pacific Islander students (8%), American Indian (1%) and Multi-ethnic and/or Other students (11%). is the support auxiliary for the University. Within the last year the CSUBF has developed a Strategic Plan for support, a reorganization of board committee's to meet the goals and objectives within the plan. As noted within the mission statement, the CSUBF will: advocate on behalf of the University to the community and local, state and federal government; provide assistance in fundraising for University programs and activities; provide good stewardship of our finances and endowments, and provide counsel to CSU and CSUB administration. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the University raised $4M and received $15.3M in annual funding in federal grants with an additional $60.8M in ongoing funding over the next 5 years. Grants have been received for: 5 year Teacher Quality Partnership ($12.9M for partners); National Childrenís Study ($10.4M for partners); and a US Dept. of Education grant ($5M) to name just a few. In addition, the University completed a successful 5 year move from NCAA Division II to Division I status; completed a review of all academic programming; and is finalizing the accreditation by the Western Association of Colleges and Schools. - The CSUB campus community, including students, faculty, staff and administration, has taken significant ownership of our responsibility to not only prepare our students for the future, but to positively impact the community in which we live. To ensure this outcome, CSUB is devoted to an ongoing strategic planning process that better aligns campus efforts with our mission.
