Independent Living Center addresses barriers people with disabilities face such as accessibility, adaptability, and limited incomes. Affordable housing and transportation, reasonable accommodations in the workplace and access to public facilities - all are critical for individuals with disabilities to retain their independence. As the staff and board of Independent Living Center of Kern County (ILCKC) work together (more than 51% of whom live with disabilities themselves) the mission of ILCKC is to empower people with disabilities to grow creatively, professionally, and personally; and to educate the community about disability related issues. Consumers who come to Independent Living Center see right away the focus on independence. Programs heighten the quality of life for people with disabilities. They meet with an independent living specialist and set specific goals, set a training schedule to meet those goals, and agree to follow the steps necessary to attain them. Group training addresses common areas of need such as money management or wellness. Workshops address focused topics. The vision of ILCKC is to promote positive change in society; leading to the integration and acceptance of persons with disabilities within our community. The Center assists consumers, their friends, and family members who work together to generate awareness, engage in positive action, and create needed change in communities as policies or challenges affect people with disabilities. Working together with other community members we can help consumers accomplish their goals, gain knowledge, skill, insight, self-confidence, and a sense of satisfaction as society moves towards a world where diversity is valued and community strengthened.
PAST YEARíS ACCOMPLISHMENTS The 2010-2011 Annual Report "This is Living" for ILCKC reports these goals: New Executive Director Jimmie Soto was appointed April 2011; New position Program Manager was brought on to increase self-sustainability, accountability, efficiency, and productivity; A community resource specialist position (now a Resource Development Manager) has the task of expanding grant writing efforts and pursue fund development opportunities such as fundraising events, in kind giving, and partnership relationships; Two new fee-for-service programs were developed. Job Development (vendorized and funded by Dept. of Rehabilitation (DOR)) empowers consumers of DOR to acquire jobs through job readiness, job search, the application and interview process, and networking with employers. The Transitions Program (vendorized and funded by Medi-Cal's California Community Transitions program) allows people with disabilities who live in institutions to transition to their own residences; New offices were leased in a more accessible and consumer friendly environment that includes such neighbors as Social Security, the county's Aging and Adult Services, and Dept. of Rehabilitation; and New Board President Heather West (of Health Net California) took the helm after outgoing President Kristy Rapley (of Chevron) fulfilled her term. CURRENT YEARíS GOALSStrategic plan goals include: ILCKC's increasing funding sustainability; Increased board capacity building and added staff trainings; Continuing efforts to maximize services to rural areas of our expansive county; and Build on our new branding efforts and relationship building with collaborative partners.
