Habitot Children's Museum is a family learning environment for children ages 0-5 and their parents (and caregivers) that is designed to help all young children reach their potential and arrive at kindergarten ready to learn. Habitot's thoughtfully developed exhibits and programs foster early learners to build curiosity about the world, creativity and self-expression, and self-confidence. Museum exhibits encourage parents to play alongside their children, reinforcing parent-child attachment and bonding which is critical for optimal outcomes for children. Parenting information, classes, a reference center and parenting staff support further nurture family relationships. Deeply committed to outreach and inclusion, Habitot has dedicated (and free) programs for teen parents, special needs families, homeless children and other vulnerable and low-income children so that those who will most benefit from the Museum have access.
More than 65,000 visitors are served by Habitot's programs each year. Most pay drop-in fees or hold memberships for year-round admission, but 10,000 of those visitors participate through Free Admission Days, field trips for Head Start schools, scholarship programs, or dedicated services to teen parents, homeless families, special needs families and others. Dozens of community agencies and libraries hold organizational passes so that clients/patrons can visit for free. Habitot serves the broader East Bay, but attracts families from throughout the Bay Area and beyond through children's museum reciprocity programs. Habitot presents an annual Early Childhood Safety Campaign, conducting free car seat checks, distributing helmet and choke tubes, offering training in CPR, first aid and choke saving, conducting lead tests and participating in safety recalls, all in cooperation with local police, fire and health departments and hospitals. Habitot hosts an annual preschool teacher recognition event, and conducts preschool teacher training, and provides parenting classes and instructional services to local schools.
