The Freedom House mission is to bring hope, restoration, and a new life to human-trafficking survivors of all ages by providing housing and long-term aftercare services.
Most of the women come to The Monarch, the residential shelter for adult female survivors, with no more than the clothing on their backs, often on an emergency basis. The Freedom House team strives to meet a survivors immediate needs: food, housing, clothing and transportation, while providing comprehensive case management to create an individual care plan. Its a holistic approach offering medical, psychological, legal aid and social services. Freedom House also provides educational opportunities, English-as-a-Second Language classes and tutoring, life-skills courses, monthly self-defense classes, job training, internships, and when a resident is ready to graduate, job placement and new housing. These are just some of the resources the non-profit offers through its network of service providers. Since opening The Monarch in August 2010, Freedom House has aided international survivors who have been trafficked from such countries as Denmark, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, the Philippines, Taiwan, China and Russia. The U.S.-born women have been trafficked in California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington and the Midwest. They range between 19 and 44 years old. In addition to helping survivors who reside at The Monarch, Freedom House regularly counsels hundreds of women each year who are seeking direction and support. Many former residents have started careers, been reunited with their families or have become advocates themselves, guiding fellow survivors on how to break free of the past and begin anew. Freedom House plans to open a second residential shelter. Known as The Nest, the home for girls will be located in Santa Clara County, underscoring the non-profit's commitment to helping survivors of all ages throughout Northern California. It will be a long-term aftercare program for middle school and high school-aged girls, 12 to 17, which will be fully staffed 24-hours a day. The Nest will be providing psychological counseling, case management, and around-the-clock individualized care, as well as home schooling and recreational activities. The aftercare program will allow the girls to experience having a childhood in a nurturing, family-style setting while receiving a good education in a safe environment. Children will be taught how to set and achieve personal goals. The Nest program is designed to fill each child with hope and the chance to dream about their future and contemplate "what they want to be when they grow up."
