Their Mission Statement

Educate and inspire through excellent programs and exhibits that promote water conservation and the sustainable use of related natural resources.

Summary of Impact

In 2009-2010, the Garden: 1)     Completed a transition from governance by a Joint Powers Authority to governance by a non-profit Board of Directors 2)     Reached 25,000 children with its school programs; initiated “Ms. Smarty Plants” assemblies at schools, libraries, and community associations 3)     Added shade and more comfortable seating to our amphitheater, turning it into an effective outdoor classroom and venue for concerts, lectures, and other events 4)     Added a rainwater harvesting exhibit to empower visitors in creating their own rain harvesting areas In 2010-2011, we implemented the following goals: 1)     Creating storm water management exhibits, including a permeable pavement fountain and a green roof 2)     Creating our first sculpture exhibition based upon our water conservation mission :  “H2O - the Art Of Conservation” 3)     Creating several classes based upon visitor request, including “Water Smart Edibles” 4)     Creating active, effective new board committees in development and marketing 5)     Creating a new planned giving program and starting an endowment The Garden was created in response to the drought of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Helix and Otay water districts saw the need to model water-wise gardening to homeowners through inspiring garden exhibits. They teamed up with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District, which had (and has) an excellent horticulture program at Cuyamaca College, and an appropriate physical site. The three formed the original Joint Powers Authority to govern the Garden.  The Garden opened to the public in 1999. Between 2001 and 2007, three other agencies joined the Joint Powers- the San Diego County Water Authority, the City of San Diego, and the Sweetwater Authority. A Friends Group formed in 2006.  During these years, the Garden's visitation has grown, from a few thousand its opening year to about 50,000.  The sixteen original exhibits have been continually improved or completely remodeled, and we have also added new gardens and exhibits, such as the Meadow, the Children’s Discovery Trail, the Fire-wise Landscaping Exhibit, and the Sensory Garden. Classes and workshops have been created for adults, children families, and landscape professionals. The Garden has created a mascot, Ms. Smarty Plants, who teaches both on- and off- campus; the Garden's classes for adults are also taught on- and off- site. As water shortages continue to make the news, and as water rates continue to rise, our work in showing people how to save water can only grow in importance.
