To support and promote the teaching of agriculture and the role it plays in our lives.
For the 2009 grant application period, SDAITC awarded $5000 in grants to 11 schools for their garden programs. We raised these funds through silent auctions and raffles organized at two Farm Bureau events: The Annual Meeting held in May and the Farmer of the Year Gala in October. We also staffed activity/information tables at two events: Farm Day at Bates Nut Farm, where all children were able to repot a foliage plant and take it home, and at the "Gardening with Class" School Garden Conference, where board members facilitated one workshop and one "make-and-take" session. SDAITC also has an auxiliary scholarship committee dedicated solely to the management, promotion, and organization of a high school scholarship fund. Through a golf tournament and private donations in 2009, SDAITC awarded over $34000 in scholarships for high school students. This year, the SDAITC board has attempted to "think outside of the box”, exploring different avenues of service to schools and how to acquire additional funding. In terms of service, we organized a new event celebrating California School Garden Week in October of 2009 called the "Food and Flower Happy Hour - A tribute to our Top Crops!" held at the San Diego Botanical Gardens. San Diego County teachers were treated to hors d’oeuvres, live acoustic music, Ramona Valley wine, flowers and foliage plants donated by local nurseries, and a myriad of educational resources focusing on San Diego agriculture. It was a huge success and confirmed our understanding that the agricultural community needs to do a much better job at promoting itself to the urban population. In terms of funding, we established an automobile donation program that has been successful in generating additional revenue. As shown here, we have also approached the San Diego Foundation for support.
