The purpose of the UC San Diego Foundation is to foster community support, promote philanthropic giving, invest and manage gift funds and assets, provide advice and counsel to the chancellor, and to act as advocates for the benefit of the University of California, San Diego campus, in accordance with applicable university policies, guidelines and procedures. The UC San Diego Foundation helps UC San Diego obtain private gifts (in support of research, teaching, and public service) and manages the gift assets.

Formed in 1972, the UC San Diego Foundation holds an endowment of $330 million as of March 2010 as well as expendable funds in excess of $100 million dollars. The Board of Trustees of the Foundation consists of the most prominent donors and alumni in the San Diego community. UC San Diego enrolls over 29,000 students, graduates over 70% within four years, and is the third largest employer in San Diego County with nearly 26,000 employees. U.S. News & World Report ranks UCSD as the 7th best public university in the nation, and 35th among the nation's top 262 universities. U.S. News ranks the School of Medicine 16th among the nation's top research medical schools and the Jacobs School of Engineering 13th among the nation's top engineering schools. The UC San Diego Medical Center was also ranked among the best in the nation in six specialty areas (respiratory disorders; rheumatology; kidney disorders; cancer; urology; psychiatry) in 2009 by U.S. News & World Report. Community leaders and long-time university supporters Joan and Irwin Jacobs, with their family, have pledged $75 million to UC San Diego Health System to build the Jacobs Medical Center on UC San Diego's east campus in La Jolla. The medical center will be home to approximately 245 patient beds and three new hospitals: the Cancer Hospital, the Hospital for Women and Infants, and the Hospital for Advanced Surgery.
