Okizu is committed to the continuing support of the childhood cancer community through its Oncology and Siblings camping programs, Family weekends, Bereavement programs, and Teen and Young Adult programs. These programs are the result of a collaborative effort of Okizu and the pediatric oncology treatment centers in northern California. The mission of Okizu is to provide peer support, respite, mentoring and recreational programs to meet the needs of all members of families affected by childhood cancer.
Since 1982, Okizu has been providing support for all members of Northern California families dealing with childhood cancer. We are unique in supporting the whole family through programs for patients, siblings, young adults, parents, and bereaved teens and families. We do this through residential camps in the summer for both patients and siblings between the ages of 6-17 and eight weekend retreats for families to receive emotional and practical support, including two for families who have lost a child. We also offer four weekends for young adults as a peer support group and two for teens who have lost a sibling. All of our programs are offered at no cost to the family and we never turn anyone away. In 2011, we served 291 patients and 430 siblings at summer cam020 family members. This is all made possible by 670 volunteers that include all of our medical staff. The program has such an impact on the life of our campers that more than 300 of them came back as adult volunteers last year.
