Alameda County Meals on Wheels' MISSION is to assist frail elders in maintaining their independence at home. Alameda County Meals on Wheels' GOAL is to provide all eligible seniors with high quality, nutritious meals according to their needs, whether hot, frozen, cold, of ethnic origin or reflecting a special diet, prepared in Alameda County in a cost-effective manner, delivered by a caring driver and administered by local community-based organizations.
Every weekday, our Meals on Wheels programs deliver over 2,200 meals to homebound seniors, approximately 600,000 meals a year. The elders we serve are unable to buy food or prepare meals for themselves. Two thirds of them are 75 years of age or older and one third are over 85. About half live at poverty level and over half live alone. Many are recuperating from illness, injury or surgery and are considered to be at high nutritional risk. All are eager for good food and companionship.
