Canopy Trees For Palo Alto
Foundation for a College Educationís mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and surrounding communities who graduate with a degree from a four-year college or university. FCE accomplishes its mission by providing free, comprehensive college access and retention services to its students and their families.
FCE's college access and retention programs are highly successful. Students who complete the FCE College Bound Program are admitted to a four-year post-secondary institution in significantly greater numbers than students who do not participate in a comprehensive after-school college access program. Our college graduation rate is nearly double the national average and almost four times the graduation rate for African-American and Latino college students. Of the 122 students who have graduated from FCEís high school program since 1999, 100 percent have enrolled in or are about to enroll in a college or university. Eighty-three percent of enrolled FCE students have either graduated from college or are on track to graduate. Fifty-three FCE alumni have received their bachelorsí degrees. Nine of these graduates have completed advanced degrees. Four others are enrolled in graduate programs. One is employed at FCE. One serves on the FCE Board of Directors. Two others serve as college coaches for FCEís students. One is the Vice Mayor of East Palo Alto and the youngest person and first Latina ever elected to the City Council. At FCE, we help our students envision success and a better life for themselves and their families, and we give them the tools to get there. In addition, we help them understand the role that they can play in improving the social conditions for other low-income people of color. The work we do with our students and parents positively affects extended families, friends, and the larger community as well. Our college graduates are serving as teachers, health workers, social workers, and community leaders. In 2007, the Lumina Foundation recognized FCE as a model college access program. Last month, FCE made the short list of finalists for a case study project on ďThe Role of College Access Programs in College Completion.Ē
