The Mission of the Center for Oral Health is to improve oral health, especially of vulnerable populations, through innovation, research, education and advocacy.
The Center for Oral Health (COH) is a leader in advancing knowledge, improving policy and inspiring the practice of oral health care. In 1996 and in 2006 COH released the “Smiles Survey” whichdemonstrated the high prevalence of dental decay in school-aged children. Direct results of these studies have been an increase in public support for oral health and the enactment of new public policies and innovative approaches in public and private dental care practice. 2001 -COH established the Oral Health Access Council (OHAC), a multi-lateral, non-partisan effort directed toward improving the oral health status of traditionally underserved and vulnerable populations. OHAC is collaborative effort of the Center and the California Primary Care Association. With a membership of over 60 organizations representing a diversity of oral health stakeholders, OHAC is California's most broad-based and unified voice for oral health. Since 2005 COH, in partnership with California Dental Association, has provided training on the early detection and prevention of early childhood caries (ECC) to more than 16,000 dental professionals and 4,500 medical professionals. 2008 -COH developed innovative intervention models in partnership with WIC to facilitate early prevention for low-income children at risk of early childhood caries. This model has been implemented in the counties of Alameda, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and San Diego and has been replicated in underserved communities across the U.S. Evaluation data shows this mode is cost-effective and cost-efficient. 2010 -COH developed a “comprehensive” oral health care in school settings. The model is supported by HRSA and leaves no child without dental care. Currently, COH is developing innovative models to improve access for various vulnerable populations, with emphasis on cost-effectiveness and self-sustainability. While the Center for Oral Health is not a direct service provider, it serves as an important incubator for innovation, tying scientific evidence with public policy and professional practice. These efforts benefit healthcare providers in public and private practice. The Center is proud of the societal impact made by the donors and supporters to these programs, and it counts these programs’ successes among its achievements.
