Promote understanding and appreciation of the natural resources of the San Francisco Bay Area, increase awareness of the human impacts upon these resources, and inspire community involvement and action that will protect and restore the Estuary and the watershed that surrounds it.
Our accomplishments:Provided watershed education training for over 450 K-12 teachers—lessons that have reached over 100,000 students.Engaged 5,200 community members—volunteers, interns, and young students—in creek and wetlands restoration efforts.Fostered the work of over 40 grassroots, community creek groups—groups that have taken ownership of and responsibility for restoring local watersheds.Built a native plant nursery that has grown over 35,000 plants for restoration efforts throughout the Bay Area. Restored a lowland coastal prairie habitat—the kind of habitat that has been almost completely destroyed in California. Restored 5 acres of San Francisco Bay’s threatened tidal marshlands—turning a toxin laden dead zone into a vibrant home for 40 resident and migratory bird species, and over 70 native plant species. In the process, and as a result of our quality work, The Watershed Project has won awards on the local, regional, state, and national levels including the City of Richmond and the U.S. EPA Environmental Achievement Award "In recognition of outstanding leadership in protecting the environment."
