To nurture the intellectual curiosity of San Diego's young people and to stimulate an ongoing appreciation of science and technology by providing hands-on learning experiences.

During the last academic more than 730 students were enrolled in our after-school, Saturday, and summer programs. Classes included Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Marine Biology, Natural Science, Neuroscience, Photography, and Physics.    Among students who were not at all interested in science or who were only moderately interested, 82% became very interested in science after attending EIS. 95% of parents noticed an improvement in their child's ability to understand complex ideas and/or scientific applications, with 82% noticing an improvement in their science scores since attending at EIS. Incredibly, 99% of parents believe EIS provides sufficient or very sufficient science and technology instruction.   A March 2010 survey of Commission on Science That Matters students yielded the following results: 89% felt that the Commission has equipped them to become leaders among their peers; 79% feel that it has equipped them to be a leader in the community; 100% think that their work will have a positive impact on the community; 70% stated that their work on the Commission has inspired them to pursue a science career. Public speaking, leadership training and experiences, and community outreach were cited as the most personally beneficial elements of the Commission program.   The EIS Board of Directors and staff work together set quarterly goals which are organized through a �Pyramid of Priorities.� For the upcoming quarter the primary goals are as follows: 1) Raise $175,000; 2) Recruit new students to maintain a total of 30 for the Commission on Science That Matters� latest program, the Living Healthy Initiative; 3) Recruit 2-3 new members for the Board of Directors; 4) Finalize and adopt an Emergency Plan; and 5) Board & Staff to arrange for a minimum of 10 site visits during the summer.
