The Interfaith Shelter Network of San Diego coordinates the efforts of participating congregations, social service agencies, and governmental programs in order to provide shelter and other resources to homeless individuals and families and enable those we serve to move toward self-sufficiency while respecting their dignity as children of God.
During our last Rotational Shelter season, from October 2010 to May 2011, we provided shelter, meals, case management, transportation, access to showers and laundry to 245 homeless individuals--men, women, children at 60 congregational sites throughout the San Diego region. More than half left for more permanent housing and more than half of the adults left with a job or income. More than 3,500 unduplicated volunteers participate in this effort; meals and volunteer hours add up to $320,000 in-kind value. At El Nido, our transitional housing program for homeless battered women with children, we served 11 families, all of whom moved into permanent housing after receiving 12-18 mos. of housing, counseling, child care, transportation, case management assistance. And we completed a $248,000 city of SD redevelopment agency rehab project at the El Nido site. For the Rotational Shelter, our goals for the next year are to provide shelter, meals, showers, case management, transportaton, and other resources to 240-275 homeless San Diegans throughout the region; to involve at least 60 congregations as shelter sites with another 60 providing volunteer support at shelter sites; to ensure all adult guests not working on Saturday mornings attend our career planning and budgeting workshops and meet at least weekly with their case manager; that the majority of adults leave with increased income. For El Nido, our goals are to ensure that all families served meet their case plan objectives and are able to move into permanent housing with increased income on exit. For the ISN overall, our main goal is to achieve more financial stability through resource development and board development that will allow us to establish a reserve account of at least $60,000 for our El Nido program and to sustain our reserves in our shelter program as well as end the year with a surplus not a deficit.
