The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation partners with resident groups, national and regional foundations and nonprofit organizations, and public agencies to revitalize an extremely underinvested community called the Diamond Neighborhoods in southeastern San Diego, California. Our mission, “Resident Ownership of Neighborhood Change,” is based on the philosophy that residents must envision, drive, and own change in their community to make it meaningful and sustainable.
Accomplishments include: 1. Widely regarded for fostering a new approach to philanthropy and innovative solutions to entrenched problems at the neighborhood level, JCNI was selected in April 2011 to serve on the White House Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative working groumade up of nonprofits, foundations, and policy think tanks is advising federal agencies on the strategic alignment of their grant-making, with a focus on creating better outcomes for children and families in under-served communities. JCNI is honored to share best practices from 13 years of place-based work, and learn from others with similar passions. While the involvement does not come with any grant award, it provides a powerful platform from which to advocate for resident ownership as the key to sustainable urban revitalization. 2. The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation was selected to receive a brownfields cleanup grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. The Center will clean up a site in southeastern San Diego (population 84,330), a rapidly urbanizing former industrial area that covers about 4,766 acres. For more than three decades, lack of infrastructure, insufficient park and recreation space, and brownfields have inhibited reinvestment and threatened community health. The target cleanup site is located in the Village at Market Creek 50 feet from a major regional transit center. Site cleanup will reduce threat of exposure to pesticides and is expected to facilitate redevelopment plans. 3. The National Endowment for the Arts granted $150,000 for support design, planning, and community engagement for a public art plan for the Village at Market Creek. A new "arts overlay" will build upon the award-winning community planning process that has revitalized this 60-acre neighborhood, once known for its severe blight, into a destination built on multicultural assets. 4. Through JCNI, the Village at Market Creek was chosen as one of 13 communities to be named a California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Catalyst Project, as part of California Sustainable Strategies Pilot Program. The Catalyst Projects for California Sustainable Strategies Pilot Program will enable the State to support local innovation, develop projects that integrate environmental, economic, transportation and housing goals and test strategies for broad implementation throughout California. JCNI received 1.3 million to develop affordable housing. 5. On a local level, key partnerships with the San Diego Police Department and public safety organizations earned the staff and volunteers of Project Safeway the Betty Peabody award through Crimestoppers, applauding Project Safeway's work in improving public safety in southeastern San Diego Communities.
