San Diego Opera is dedicated to producing opera and vocal arts of the highest artistic caliber that enrich local community life. Through extensive education and outreach activities, we strive to make opera engaging and accessible for everyone.
Accomplishments - Past Year Last year 41,356 tickets were sold to 16 performances, representing 90% of house capacity in the Civic Theatre. It was a strong season and we reached 97% of our target goal, despite the difficult economic climate. Three of the four productions made 100% of goal, with Romeo & Juliet reaching 90%. Operation: Opera had another successful year reaching over 100,000 children and adults in San Diego. Education programs such as the Student Dress Rehearsals and Words & Music Program were experienced by children at hundreds of local schools. Web learning increased exponentially with more than 13% San Diegans accessing opera education via the internet. SDO made significant changes to its website, making it easier for patrons to purchase tickets 24 hours per day. They can now select their own seat, view the stage from the approximate location of that seat, make an online donation and print the bar-coded ticket on their home computer, making entry to the theatre even faster and easier. With solid ticket sales, the implementation of a variety of practical cost-saving measures, and contributed income of nearly $7.78 million, SDO concluded its 25th consecutive season with a balanced budget. Goals - Current Year To serve the region by producing grand opera of the highest possible artistic quality for audiences up to 56,000. We will audition and employ the most outstanding, established and emerging American and international talent. To continue to maintain an exceptional education and outreach program for schoolchildren and adults that encourages the enjoyment, appreciation, understanding and study of music. Called Operation: Opera, the program will reach up to 80,000 citizens through a variety of different programs that vary from “exposure” and enrichment to 12-week residencies. To accomplish all organizational activities while achieving a 26th consecutive year of a balanced operating budget, without any cutback in the quality of programming.
