The San Diego Society of Natural History (Museum), founded in 1874 is the second oldest scientific institution in Southern California and the third oldest in the western United States; a leader among local museums and scientific institutions.  The Museumís mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment.

Summary of Impact

In 2009-10, the Museum served nearly 533,000 individuals of all ages. Top accomplishments include: (1) Exhibitions Two successful traveling exhibitions, now closed: Body Worlds & The Brain and Darwin: Evolution/Revolution. The opening of three other major exhibitions: o       Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries (Closed Sept. 2010) o       All That Glitters: The Splendor and Science of Gems and Minerals. (Open through March 2012) o       Lizards and Snakes: Alive! (open through April 2011) (2) Environmental Science Education Center (ESEC): ESEC programs served more than 161,000 individuals of all ages through science workshops, the Nature To You specimen loan program, Museum Access Fund, BioBlitz and free, standards-based Educator Guides in English and Spanish. (3) Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias (BRCC) §                San Jacinto 100-year resurvey. §                Atlas Projects: Bird, Plant Atlas and Herpetology Atlases, providing a comprehensive resource of flora and fauna distribution in our region. §                The Post-Hurricane Jimenez rapid biodiversity assessment expedition. §                The Guadalupe Island 10-year botany review. §                Award of highly prestigious federal grants funding collections conservation and research. §                Fossil preparation of a 75,000-year-old Mastodon (mammoth) unearthed in National City. (4) Membership and Financials §           New 3D theater technology has helped boost new membershi200. §           Ended the FY 2009-10 with a small surplus.                                                                                                                                                         (5) LEED Certification in 2009. Goals for the coming year include: (1) Open two new exhibitions and related education and public programs, including Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins and The Horse. (2) Begin development of four additional core, permanent exhibitions, including: o                   Habitat Journey o                   Exploring Biodiversity and NatureSpace o                   Extraordinary Ideas from Ordinary People: A History of Citizen Science o                   Open Ocean  (3) Continue to operate under a Rational Sustainability Plan.
