Our mission is to create a better future for the San Diego River through volunteerism, education, and championing the creation of a river-long park system.
Past Year Accomplishments Removed more than 80,000 lbs of trash from the River Organized more than 25,000 volunteer hours of service Conserved through direct acquisition and working with our partners more than 1000 acres of high priority conservation areas. Current Year Goals Complete two conservation acquisitions. We have engaged hundreds of new donors to help raise the funds needed to acquire critical conservation lands. We have just $1 million left to raise and only 7 acquisition priorities left on our targeted list to substantially secure the future biological health of the San Diego River ecosystem, a globally significant natural area. By completing two river surveys and working with our partners we have a goal of removing all trash identified within 6 months. Today the River is much cleaner and healthier. Our volunteers have removed more than 1.5 million lbs. of trash from the river. The River trail is advancing toward the goal of connecting the mountains to the ocean over a 60+ mile trail system. This year we will see groundbreaking of our number one River Trail project, an important gap which will connect two existing trail segments in Mission Valley, the most urban section of the River. Complete phase two of fundraising for the 17 acre Grant Park in Mission Valley and the associated Discovery Center. Our goal is to raise $7.5 million dollars to start permitting in 2013 and to continue our efforts to meet with the community on refining the design and programming of the future facility. We will be closer to serving this park deficient community and reach our goals of providing world-class environment education opportunities. To begin to work on addressing homeless in the San Diego River. We believe that we can add a new perspective on this issue and help bring solutions to this incredible challenge. We have been told that more than 10% of the City of San Diego's unsheltered homeless population lives along the river. Our surveys confirm this number.
