Operation Access mobilizes a network of medical volunteers, hospitals, and referring community clinics to provide low-income, uninsured people access to donated outpatient surgical and specialty care that improves their health, ability to work and quality of life.

The continued economic downturn resulted in continued demand for OA services in 2011. We processed 2000 referrals and arranged 1585 services (+14% over 2010)  to be provided to underserved individuals who might not otherwise have received care. OA is a dependable referral resource for 90 Bay Area community clinics when their low-income, uninsured patients need surgical, specialty, and diagnostic care. 2011 stakeholder survey results: 96% of patients, 97% of volunteers, and 92% of clinics rated their experience with OA as "very good" or "excellent". Patients who had surgical procedures reported the following outcomes as a result of care provided through OA: 95% had improved quality of life 95% had improved health 89% had improved ability to work Among patients who had diagnostic and/or non-surgical procedures, 93% reported that they made a lifestyle change as a result of the care they received. Volunteers: 96%  probably or definitely will be volunteering with OA in one year 89% rate overall satisfaction with OA as very good/excellent 50% recruit others to volunteer with OAWe also take pride in the fact that OA supports these individuals' personal philanthropy:  91% see volunteering with OA as an opportunity to help others in the community 67% volunteer with OA because volunteering is part of their value system In 2011, OA generated an ROI of 10:1 ($13 million in donated medical care provided vs. budget of $1.3 million) In  July, 2011, Operation Access received the inaugural Health Care Heroes Award for Community Impact by an Organization from the in recognition of our contribution to the well-being of the underserved in the Bay Area.  In May, 2012, OA founders, William Schecter, MD, Doug Grey, MD and Paul Hofmann, DrPH, received the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Bay Area Leadership Award.
