Caminar’s mission is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by providing opportunities to live in the community with dignity and independence.
Caminar, established in 1964, provides innovative program services for adults and transitional age youth with mental health disabilities as well as adults with developmental disabilities. Our current community service locations include the counties of San Mateo, Solano, and Butte in California. The number of people Caminar serves yearly has grown from 41 individuals initially to more than 3,600. Caminar is committed to achieving the highest standard of quality in providing services for people with disabilities. To that end, Caminar is proud to announce that CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, has awarded Caminar a Three Year Accreditation, for meeting their international standards for quality and commitment to excellence. According to CARF, “This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards.” Furthermore, Caminar continues to contribute to advancements in the field through the implementation of new and innovative approaches to service and education. Today, the agency offers a full range of related support services in four primary areas—community based supported services, supported housing, supported employment, and supported education. Throughout the years, Caminar has continually demonstrated cost effectiveness and efficiency for those in need of care. For example, a San Mateo County Health Systems Task Force report released in October, 2010, stated that partnerships, such as Caminar REACH (Recovery, Empowerment, and Coordinated Housing) have shown remarkable results. REACH data supports annually savings of $1 million to the County through a dramatic decline in hospitalization, incarceration, and homelessness. The success rate of Redwood House, our crisis residential program, is also impressive. Clients are referred to Redwood House after hospitalization, incarceration, or homelessness and after 30 days, 80% transitioned to a lower level of care. Caminar is committed to continuing to develop and provide innovative program services, offering opportunities to enable people with disabilities to live, work, and pursue an education in their communities—based on their choice and ability.
