Their Mission Statement

Colorado Fourteeners Initiative preserves and protects the natural integrity of Colorado's 54+ 14,000-foot peaks through active stewardship and public education.

Summary of Impact

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Through the end of the 2012 summer field season, CFI has completed construction of 26 sustainable summit routes on 24 peaks. Construction of sustainable summit hiking routes, closure of user-created trails and restoration of damaged vegetation protects the unique alpine tundra ecosystems on the Fourteeners that took more than 12,000 years to create. "Adopt-a-Peak" volunteer programs provide annual maintenance once a sustainable route has been developed. Since the program's inception in 2001, almost 8,000 volunteer days have been donated to help maintain these summit routes. More than 52,100 hikers have been contacted while hiking a Fourteener by volunteer "Peak Stewards" or CFI crew leaders to discuss the importance of using Leave No Trace practices to reduce environmental impacts while hiking in these extremely fragile ecosystems.
