The Apopka Family Learning Center's mission is the creation of a unique, educational environment of hope and encouragement for lifetime learning. The AFLC helps families address vital issues of education, literacy, parenting skills, health care, and money management. AFLC builds strong families one day at a time. The Apopka Family Learning Center (AFLC) offer solutions to underserved low-income youth and families in South Apopka. AFLC helps families address vital issues of education, literacy, parenting skills, health care, and money management. With strong roots in the community for over three decades, we are extremely proud of our inter-generational approach to building stronger families one day at a time.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit AFLC is the only local agency that specializes in academic support for low-income families by offering daily, academic enrichment programs for kindergarten through eighth grade students. AFLC has expertise in supporting ethnic minorities, as they encounter the compound effects of poverty and maintains an innovative and holistic approach programming. AFLC's specific goals include the following:AFLC will be a peaceful learning environment due to a Positive Discipline ApproachStudents will take ownership of their learningParents or guardians will become actively involved in their child's educationStudents who attend KIM will demonstrate academic growth from fall to spring in math and literacyKids in Motion (KIM) Children attend grade specific class lessons and individualized tutoring to strengthen math, writing, and reading skills; as well as, critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication skills, and basic money management skills. AFLC has had over18 graduating classes from our KIM program. Percentages at or above 90%of students in all grade levels achieve satisfactory gradesA third to a half of all students maintain 3.0 GPAs or better Roughly half of K-1 students show improvements in academic performance.In grades 2-5, between 30% and 40% of all students show a one-grade-level or better improvement in performance between first and second semesters-KIM Voluntary Summer School 2012 served 85 low to moderate-income, minority children, ages 5-14, and met Mondays-Fridays from 8:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.-KIM increased parental involvement to include parent meetings, quarterly parent-teacher conferences, personal development classes, and parent chaperone roles for special field trips. Parents commit to volunteer 15 hours of service per semester.As AFLC has grown to keep pace with the needs of a growing community, it has remained debt-free which is one of our greatest accomplishment.
