The long-standing mission of the Farmworker Association of Florida is to empower farmworker and rural low-income communities to respond to and gain control over the social, political, economic, workplace, health, and environmental justice issues affecting their lives.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Three of FWAF's major accomplishments during the last year were: * Worked with Florida Legal Services to file a legal case on behalf of a nursery worker who experienced adverse health effects after she was exposed to Endosulfan. The case was tried in federal court in Miami and the worker was awarded $100,000 for her exposure to toxic pesticides. Also, approximately 20 employees of the company are entitled to file claims against a settlement fund for improper classification of the workers as independent contractors, which saved the company substantial amounts in payroll taxes and worker's compensation premiums. Each worker may receive as much as $5,000. * Collaborated with national partner Rural Coalition to provide education to farmworkers and small farmers about the Farm Bill process and contents. From six listening sessions, FWAF compiled the input from farmworkers and small farmers on their needs related to the Farm Bill, which was relayed to Congresspersons and incorporated into Rural Coalition's advocacy work to move the Farm Bill forward. FWAF also presented a workshop on the Farm Bill at the Food Chain Workers Alliance conference.* Registered 501 new voters in rural communities in Central and South Florida; mobilized more than 2,000 voters on Election Day; reached nearly 5,000 community members via phone and personal visits to promote voting on or before Election Day; conducted 8 trainings on legislative advocacy with 97 community members; and, conducted 12 trainings on voter education with more than 500 community members on how to fill out the ballot, the dozen proposed state constitutional amendments, and early and absentee voting. FWAF's current goals are to focus program and advocacy work on improving farmworkers' living and working conditions, healthcare access, and sustainable agriculture.
