The mission of The Greater Miami Youth Symphony (GMYS) is 1) to instill life long values of discipline, teamwork, responsibility, respect, and cultural appreciation in young musicians, ages five through eighteen, through learning, rehearsing, and performing in a professional, positive environment. 2) to enrich the cultural foundation of our community by reaching out to and recruiting young musicians from different cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. 3) to train young people through teaching, rehearsals, and performances to function together as first rate orchestras, and ensembles that bring the communities together in outstanding music performances.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit The Greater Miami Youth Symphony continues to expand and grow based on its founding mission to enrich the cultural foundation of our community. In the 2005-06 season, the Youth Symphony, with funding from the Children’s Trust, began an exciting program entitled “PreStarter Strings”. The mission and purpose of PreStarters was to provide beginning free instrument instruction to students with no prior experience or training on string instruments, and to feed them into the Young Mozarts Ensemble, the first of four performing orchestras of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony. Since 2005, GMYS has expanded this program to a total of eight sites, and now includes beginning instruction for all orchestral instruments. Prior to 2007, GMYS had only three orchestras, but due to our successful outreach programs, we added a fourth orchestra in order to serve all interested students. Today, GMYS serves over 550 students during the school-year, and over 350 youth in the summer. Current funding has also given the Youth Symphony the ability to hire an executive director and a grant assistant, as well as other administrative and artistic support. Building this administrative and artistic staff has fueled our growth through successful promotion of our programs and successful grant applications over the last four seasons. In addition to our school year programming, in 2007, GMYS started its first ever summer music camp, which was continued in the summer of 2008 and 2009. 2007 was the last year the National Endowment for the Arts offered a funding stream specific to summer camps. In that year, GMYS was the only orchestra nationwide to received funding for summer music youth programming. In June 2007, GMYS Symphony Orchestra completed an Italy concert tour. GMYS was designated a semifinalist in 2009 and 2010 for a Coming Up Taller Award from the Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and is currently the Youth Artists in Residence at the Deering Estate at Cutler.
