The Seminole Cultural Arts Council is a catalyst for the preservation of local cultural and historic heritage, including performing, literary, visual arts and sciences; serving to sustain, develop, and advance the cultural life of Seminole County.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Accomplishments: 1. SCAC has successfully increased its presence in the community through the creation of two brochures: one providing information on SCAC's services and the other an art and cultural "map" detailing places of artistic/cultural/historic interest in Seminole County. These ventures have been the fruitful results of partnerships between the SCAC, community members, and Seminole County Economic Development, and are available at all state and local tourist information centers. 2. SCAC is a centralizing force in the community; expanding art and cultural programming in Seminole County. Our annual "Meet and Greet," event is significant in fulfilling our mission as it provides an opportunity for various art and cultural groups to present themselves and their achievements to the community at large. This event is additionally beneficial as it is also a forum where SCAC can receive valuable feedback from both groups and residents in an effort to determine further art and cultural needs and provide better service. This event is one of our biggest successes as it has not only garnered increasingly participation from both art and cultural groups but also area small businesses who seek to host the events. It has also received increasing attendance from Seminole County residents.3. As part of our “Arts the Community” program, SCAC commissioned artist Erick Whiteside, and supplied materials, for the painting of a mural to appear on the side of the Midway Safe Harbor Center, in Midway; an agricultural community on the outskirts of Sanford historically known for its celery production and numerous artesian wells.Prior to the design of the project, Mr. Whiteside and SCAC past President, Linda Moore, met with a group of community leaders, local historian and writer, Victoria Brown-Smith, and Pastor Emory Blake to gain historical information on the area. As a result of these discussions, the mural celebrates the past, present, and future of the Midway community. Volunteers from “Hands On Orlando,” members of the community, and past SCAC Interim Executive Director, Megan Stepe assisted Mr. Whiteside with the initial painting of the mural on January 17, 2009. The public was invited to attend the official unveiling of the piece on February 26, 2009. 4. SCAC raised over $10,000 during the Fourth Annual "Hoooowl for the Arts" Fundraiser, held last October. This event features uniquely designed masks, created by local artists and community members, for auction. All proceeds support art and cultural programs in Seminole County.Goals: 1. SCAC will broaden support for cultural preservation programs which aid the underserved population of Seminole County.2. Coordinate with local artists and public schools to increase the number of creative opportunities (i.e. classes, one-day workshops, or other programs) increasing awareness of the value of arts and the quality of arts education. 3. Increase technical and financial support for artists.4. Expand existing and future programs by increasing membership.
