Yummy Stuff Club (YSC) was created to help children and their families develop everyday habits of healthy eating. YSC strives to nourish children's bodies while feeding their minds and creating healthy habits that last a lifetime. This mission is carried forward by classroom instruction and interaction with students in schools and afterschool programs. Over 1,000 children in Sarasota do not have enough food to eat on a daily basis. Children who are hungry may have difficulty concentration or may be disruptive becasue they lack adequate nutrition on a daily basis. The goal of YSC is to foster healthy children, arrest childhood hunger and provide healthy choices to students. -The Children's Healthy Pantry operates in 7 schools; we want to expand this program to include all the Title I schools in Sarasota county. The pantries are stocked monthly with water and healthy snacks for children who are hungry in school and who need a healthy snack. We purchase single serving fruit cups, granola bars and bottled water which are distributed to schools by volunteers. Each school determines when and how to best distribute the snacks. Additionally, fresh fruit is donated weekly by Detweilers and delivered to two schools. Einstein Bagels also contributes a weekly donation to a third school. We want to increase our donations and serve more schools. Yummy Buddy Activity Book reinforces the YSC goals. Written in English and Spanish, the book helps children learn to eat smart to be smart. We want to make this book available to children everywhere...in schools, in doctors' and dentists' offices, etc. Aimed at early readers, the book can be an activity in school or at home; the message is simple and the activities are fun. We want to distribute this book to children in schools and afterschool programs. We need sponsors to support the books' publication and distribution.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Children's Healthy Pantry serves over 1,100 students each month of the school year. Active in seven Title I schools, the pantries make available healthy snacks and bottled water to hungry children.We incorporated as a 501(c)3. Previously, Yummy Stuff Club operated in collaboration with Jewish Family & Children Services under the umbrella of the Community Foundation. As we grew, we decided we needed to be active as an independent 501(c)3 organization We developed a board of 11 members and an advisory board that includes a school principal, a physcian, a nutritionist and a Spanish-speaking educator. The board held two fund raising events, raising over $2,000 and received foundation grants totalling $5,590. Our goals for the coming year include: Serving three additional schools with Children's Healthy Pantries (and raising the funds to do that), increasing our presence and recognition in the community and publishing 2,000 Yummy Buddy Activity Books.Increasing the number of pantries requires we raise an additional $9,300. Current costs for the pantry are $3,000 per school year; allowing for cost increase, we estimate the cost of the pantry to be $3,100 during the next year. Publishing 2,000 books to be distributed to students requires that we find corporate or individual sponsors who will cover the cost ($10 per book). Increasing our presence and recognition in the community will require developing a communication plan, implementing a social media campaign and increased public speaking events by our Executive Director, Susan Morin. Ms. Morin has spoken at schools, to parents' organizations and service clubs in the past year. The cost of these speaking engagements is minimal, averaging $50 for materials and $10 for travel expenses. This activity will be increased as the board members assume more responsibility for fund raising and addressing our strategic plans and goals.
