Their Mission Statement

The mission of Prevent Blindness Florida is to promote a lifetime of healthy vision care through vision screenings, assistance with obtaining prescription glasses, vision surgery, and providing vision education. Imagine not being able to see to perform daily tasks or learn in school. Imagine not being able to see the faces of your loved ones or the world around you. These are very real challenges for people who do not have access to, or who cannot afford, vision care. Children whose vision problems go undetected, often display fatigue, fidgeting, and frustrations in the classroom. These traits can lead to a misdiagnosis of dyslexia or other learning disabilities. An estimated 80% of children with a learning disability have an undiagnosed vision problem. Without vision correction, adults and children lives are negatively impacted. A vision screening can determine the need to seek the care of an eye doctor. Statistics show most people, estimated at about 75% of the population with vision impairment, just need prescription glasses or magnifying ""reading"" glasses. The need is great. A pair of prescription glasses will change how an individual perceives the world. PBF seeks to screen marginalized children and adults who lack access to vision care. Children who have bad vision often do not excel in school. Often, improving their vision changes their life. They receive better grades and often increase the quality of their life. The number of Americans at risk for age-related eye diseases is increasing as the baby-boomer generation ages. These conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, affect more Americans than ever before.

Summary of Impact

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit In 2012, Prevent Blindness Florida certified vision screeners screened over 8,000 children and adults (3,149 passes and 5,516 referrals), and provided approximately 4,600 exams and glasses in underserved communities. It is the vision of Prevent Blindness Florida that all adults and children receive a "lifetime of healthy vision." Some of our top accomplishments for the past year are: 1. Screening all 280 students at the Police Athletic League (PAL) "Team Success" School in Bradenton. When teachers saw two students squinting to read a whiteboard last year, they began to wonder how many other students at the F-rated school might have poor eyesight. So school officials sought help from PBF. We screened all 280 students, and 70 required vision correction (1/4 of the population). We assisted with the follow-up exams and glasses. The school raised their FCAT scores from an "F" to a "B"! 2. Successfully securing and delivering on an Allegany Franciscan Ministries grant $200,000. We partnered with organizations reaching the homeless community, domestic violence victims, and families that are economically marginalized. We screened 4,000 clients last year through this funding. 3. Executed on a partnership with Children's Board of Hillsborough County and screened thousands of children. Many received exams and glasses throughout the five partnership years. Additionally, PBF Sarasota monthly screenings at the Ringling Blvd. and 17th Street locations health department clinics reaching the marginalized population. Additionally, PBF securing funding through the Driver License dollar check-off program which provides statewide visibility and income for our programs. The strategic goals of PBF developed by our Board are: Delivery quality programs, making vision care a statewide priority and building and sustaining financial stability.
