The Latino International Theater Festival of New York, Inc. (LITF/NY) supports and empowers New York Latino artists city-wide through a curated series of TeatroStageFest performances and events by local and visiting companies from Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, that give voice to the ever-growing Latino community in the U.S.A. As New Yorkís main celebration of Latino Theater and Culture, TeatroStageFest fosters cross-cultural dialogue with multicultural and multi-generational audiences of backgrounds by introducing them to groundbreaking theater performances (made accessible with English super-titles for Spanish-language shows) which are featured side-by side with dance, music and puppetry productions, artist panel discussions and TalkBacks, workshops and conferences. LITF/NY develops a new generation of theater artists and audiences through educational programs such as the Young Playwrights Latino Challenge for high school students, and year-round internships that provide college students with professional training in Production, Marketing, Management and Fundraising. LITF/NYís reciprocal cultural engagement programs in Ibero-America, the Caribbean, and the United States, strengthen the organizationís role as New Yorkís main portal to this greatly untapped region.
TeatroStageFest 2007-2011 has played a lead role in spotlighting the best stage productions by New York-based Latino companies and from around the world. The past five festivals have brought together 513 local and 157 international artists, featured 167 performances of 86 unique theater, dance, music, comedy and puppetry shows and events from New York, Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain before an average of 5,000 annual multicultural and multi-generational audiences. TeatroStageFest has received numerous recognitions and awards (ACE-Association of Spanish-Language Critics and HOLA-Hispanic Organization of Latino Artists) for its many contributions to the enrichment of the Latino community and of all New Yorkers. In 2007, Susana Tubert was recipient of the New York State Bobby Capó Lifetime Achievement Award and was recognized in 2011 by NBC-4 in a month-long broadcast of PSAs featuring outstanding Hispanic leaders. Through LITF/NY's main educational program,Young Playwrights Latino Challenge (2006-2009), 2,200 high school students and 65 teachers were provided with access to 124 in-school and Saturday bilingual playwriting workshops in the 5 boroughs. YPLC culminated with a citywide competition for students of all backgrounds that led to 177 play submissions and the celebrated Awards Ceremony at TeatroStageFest. Additionally, TeatroStageFamily programming has provided subsidized tickets to elementary school aged children in underserved communities. For many of these children, the Festivalís performances represented their first encounter with live Theater. LITF/NYís year round services-to-the-field provide emerging artists and students with access to free artist panels, lectures and professional training workshops, internships and volunteer opportunities. The organization supports local companies through its distribution of the TeatroStageFest Guide to Latino Theater in New York & Other Resources and through $300,000 of in-kind marketing support thanks to its annual partnerships with 15 to 20 Media Sponsors, resulting in nearly 1 million impressions and 200 press mentions every year. Through additional grassroots e-marketing initiatives with community based organizations, nearly 200,000 individuals are made aware of New York´s thriving community of Latino Theaters featured at TeatroStageFest.
