VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a nonprofit rehabilitation and social service organization whose purpose is to develop and implement programs to: assist people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired to lead independent and active lives in their homes and communities, and educate the public to understand the capabilities and needs of people who are blind or visually impaired so that they may be integrated into all aspects of community life. VISIONS fulfills its purpose by providing: Individualized rehabilitation training at home or in the community Social services Employment training and job development Group and community education and activities VISIONS programs focus on individuals with low income in the Greater New York Area who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities, elders, limited-English speakers and culturally diverse consumers.
VISIONS increased the number of participants served in FY 2010 to over 5000. VISIONS added caregiver support services, expanded its summer youth employment program to over 100 and added academic enrichment to the blind youth services. Hundreds of community presentations on vision loss reached populations at high risk. Computer and assistive technology training expanded to include monthly public seminars and classes in both Mac and PC platforms for people who are totally blind or partially sighted. VISIONS recruited new Board members and staff to fill vacancies. No layoffs or furloughs occurred despite the difficult economy.VISIONS changed the name and logo of the VCB program from Vacation Camp for the Blind to VISIONS Center on Blindness to better reflect the rehabilitation, education and training emphasis.VISIONS met all of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Standards and is an accredited charity and member of the BBB seal program for charity accountability.VISIONS was chosen as a Great Disability Nonprofit.In 2011, VISIONS will continue providing free services for the mostly low income participants in VISIONS programs. VISIONS will maintain service levels while seeking new funding opportunities for expansion of programs to meet the needs of blind or visually impaired New Yorkers of all ages. VISIONS will create new programs to serve under-served low income populations.
