Young people--particularly African-American and Latino youth--need to develop sound literacy skills so they can take advantage of employment and college opportunities. Teachers, counselors, and other youth workers need stimulating reading material to inspire teens to develop literacy skills and educate themselves about important social and personal issues. Young people need ways to communicate with each other and with adults about important issues. Youth in foster care need to learn basic life skills so they can survive and thrive once they leave the state's care.
We increased the literacy and job skills of 100 teens by training them to write stories and produce illustrations for two magazines with combined readerships of over 120,000 teens and adults. Over 800 teachers and other staff used our publications in their literacy and counseling work. We sold over 10,000 of our teen-written anthologies for use in schools and literacy programs. Our most important current goal is to increase our teen readership and improve the curriculum and other supportive materials we provide with our magazines and books to help staff use them.
