The mission of The Mental Health Association of Westchester County, Inc. (MHA) is to promote mental health in Westchester through advocacy, community education and direct services. MHA is the premier mental health agency in Westchester, serving 17,000 individuals each year through advocacy, community education and direct services, with priority given to those with limited access to other resources. MHA’s programs provide for early identification of mental illness, offer community-based treatments, and incorporate evidenced-based interventions.
MHA’s Adult Home Case Management Program, which provides a range of supports to individuals residing at three Westchester adult homes, increased its caseload by 21% in 2009. The program’s case managers and peer support specialists help clients to achieve life goals of wellness, education, housing, and employment through advocacy; outreach; and crisis intervention. Clinical Services are designed for individuals of all ages and families and are provided at community based mental health outpatient clinics, at the individual’s home or at a community location such as a health care center, school, library or shelter. In 2009, MHA instituted a partnership at the Lexington Center for Recovery, an alcohol and substance abuse treatment center, whose clients often have a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. Enrollment increased by 55% in MHA’s Care Coordination program, a ground-breaking, person-centered model of providing services to individuals who have a diagnosis of a serious mental illness and who have not demonstrated significant recovery through traditional case management. Long-Term Care Ombudsmen Program (LTCOP) volunteers provide an unparalleled and vital service to residents of long term care facilities (nursing and adult homes, assisted living facilities and enriched housing) throughout Westchester. In 2009, LTCOP’s 52 dedicated volunteers increased the number of visits to residents by 25%, helping 7,716 older adults. Nuestro Futuro served 34% more individuals in 2009, an indication of both the need for its services and its success in reaching out to Westchester’s growing Latino population. It is the only distinct, comprehensive bilingual and bicultural mental health program offered in Westchester, and MHA is perceived as the leader in providing these services.
