Food assistance programs such as food banks, pantries and kitchens are at an all time high of emergency need and in dire need of fresh food sources. More than half of the clients are children and their families, the elderly and disabled. Malnutrition can permanently retard a child's physical growth and brain development, low-income children who attend school hungry score significantly lower on standardized tests than non-hungry, low-income children. The elderly experience more illness when their nutritional needs are not met.
