The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania's mission is to connect the people of southwwestern Pennsylvania to birds and nature through our programs, projects, and places.

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit In addition to expanding our core environmental education and engagement activities, in 2011-212 ASWP: ASWP completed and opened DiscoverGround at its Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve. Free of charge and open sunrise to sunset, this 1-acre, $200,000 feature provides an opportunity for young children to experience unstructured play and exploration in safe outdoor setting.Audubon successfully integrated operations of its newly acquired Succop Conservancy with the rest of its operations. Beginning in Sept., 2011, public programming was replicated at Succop proving the residents of northern Allegheny and southern Butler Counties with additional opportunities to learn about and connect with nature. ASWP successfully raised, through private sources, over $750,000 for direct support and physical improvements at Succo000 gallons of stormwater runoff from entering the creek.   2012-13 GoalsASWP will continue to build on the momentum of 2011 through addition shared programming, staffing, and equipment utilization between Beechwood and Succop by identifying additional economies of scale. Primary milestones are financial, including operating margin and growth in operating reserves.Audubon will redefine and expand public programming with an increasing emphasis on Citizen Science. Citizen Science enables non-professionals to gather and process field observations that professionals can then use to further their research. This leverages peoples� passions and interests to help scientisst advance our knowledge of the natural world. Primary milestones include attendance numbers, data points collected, and programmatic evaluations.ASWP will renovate one of its Beechwood classrooms into an indoor nature discovery area featuring additional live animals and natural history exhibits. ASWP will begin work on adding two classrooms and retail space at Succop Conservancy. Primary milestone is project completion.  In 2011-2012, in addition to expanding our informal education programs, we will Complete DiscoverGround, a new nature-based play area for children and foster understanding of the importance for unstructured play in parents. Fully Integrate Succop Conservancy- staff, programs, and facilities- into ASWButlerCo.- a new bird protection area. Initiate three-year plan to create 100 artificial chimneys to support Chimney Swift breeding needs in southwestern PA.
