The Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy.
Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Accomplishments The EFWCP is proud to report that it is one of just a handful of local affiliates of the Epilepsy Foundation to have achieved Standards of Excellence. These standards set the bar high for what people with epilepsy should expect from an Epilepsy Foundation organization. The Epilepsy Foundation National also recognizes the EFWCP as one of the top fundraising organizations in the country each year. The Annual Mardi Gras Gala, the Westmoreland County Sports Dinner & Auction and the Pirates Family Fun/Run Walk for Epilepsy are among the top fundraising events in our region and across the country. The EFWCP has developed and is launching new and exciting initiatives that focus upon improving the coordination of care for children who have seizures. Project Access is a federal funded program that allows the EFWCP to work with medical partners like the Department of Neurology, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, pediatricians and parents. Educating each partner in care on how to best utilize the local health care system and leverage the most from community resources available to the child’s family helps to ensure that the services provided to children results in both comprehensive and coordinated care. Research shows that patient centered case management services result in both better health outcomes for patients with chronic conditions and leads to cost efficient health services. Another new EFWCP initiative for children who have seizures is helping parents and families to learn more about care management and the importance of seizure self-management. Staffed by both a nurse and services coordinator, the Start SMART (Seizure Management Awareness and Recognition Training) project helps families to develop the self-management skills and behaviors that will result in the positive health outcomes for their children while reducing reliance upon and utilization of costly healthcare services. These families benefit from advocacy, care coordination and patient education that will help them to manage their child’s care for a lifetime. Goals The EFWCP has secured some exciting new grants that have allowed us to work on important new issues. However, much work remains to be done in our region. The EFWCP is committed to achieving new goals related to outreach to veterans and their families, educating first responders about appropriate seizure recognition & response and, expanding our collaborations with Pennsylvania’s public schools. The EFWCP is dedicated to working with veterans and their families to educate them about the relationship between head injuries and post-traumatic epilepsy. This is an especially important issue for those members of the armed forces who have recently served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. New, nationally approved training materials and curriculums for law enforcement and emergency responders are now available. The EFWCP is currently working to spread the work about these training opportunities to the more than 80,000 Pennsylvania emergency medical technicians and paramedics. More than 15,000 students in Pennsylvania public schools have been identified by school nurses as students with epilepsy. Many of these students are young children who might require the administration of an emergency medication to interrupt seizures that do not stothe EFWCP is working to develop an on-line resource for training in the administration of rescue drugs. These types of short-term objectives result in long-term, positive outcomes that will help to create more accepting, better prepared and more responsive communities for people who live with epilepsy.
