Their Mission Statement

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) protects and restores the natural and built environments through innovation, collaboration, education and advocacy. PEC believes in the value of partnerships with the private sector, government, communities and individuals to improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians.   The mission is accomplished through:  Innovation: PEC seeks to develop new policies, programs and projects that demonstrate unique, but replicable approaches to solving environmental problems using market-based and other non-partisan, science-driven solutions. Collaboration: PEC believes in the power of partnerships, bringing together people and interests of diverse backgrounds to develop positive solutions to problems that address the concerns of all stakeholders. Education: PEC promotes the understanding of environmental issues by the public, communities, organizations, public officials and other decision-makers by making unbiased and understandable information available on problems and solutions. Advocacy: PEC is a catalyst for legislative, regulatory and policy change by public and private decision-makers to advance solutions that are in the best environmental and economic interests of the Commonwealth.

Summary of Impact

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit Southwest Regional Office With Pittsburgh as its center, southwestern PA’s history was written by water while the surrounding countryside is defined by river-carved gorges and the Allegheny Mountains. This rebirth of the community flowed from the rebirth of the rivers, and the PA Environmental Council has been a leader in both. Abandoned mine drainage is still the region’s most significant water quality issue. PEC helped bring about dramatic improvements in the federal mine reclamation program. Including $1.4 billion for the state, and helped develop watershed assessments and clean-up projects across the region. Rain gets into many sanitary sewers, causing raw sewage to overflow into our rivers. We also work to improve stormwater management and land-use ordinance, especially in such locations as the Pine Creek basin in Allegheny County. PEC’s Allegheny County Riverfronts Project provides the overall planning and coordination for recreation, conservation and access along the county’s four rivers. We are also at the heart of a number of significant trail projects, advancing the Great Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. – particularly the challenging Pittsburgh sections – and leading the effort to connect Pittsburgh to Erie. In addition, PEC coordinates and implements water trail projects throughout the region. PEC’s sustainable tourism initiative in the Laurel Highlands strives to attract people to the mountains while conserving the resources and promoting a conservation ethic. PEC also has promoted scenic byways, joint municipal programs and major new areas for visitation – the Flight 93 National memorial and the Stonycreek-Quemahoning Initiative – to sustainably rebuild the economy.
