The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy protects and restores exceptional places to provide our region with clean waters and healthy forests, wildlife and natural areas for the benefit of present and future generations. The Conservancy creates green spaces and gardens, contributing to the vitality of our cities and towns, and preserves Fallingwater, a symbol of people living in harmony with nature.   Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities, has recognized the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy as one of the top ten charities in the nation!  Over the last decade, we have consistently received exceptional Charity Navigator ratings for financial health, accountability and transparency.

Summary of Impact

Impact Summary from the Nonprofit In 2011: ·WPC conserved 10 properties in Western and Central Pennsylvania, totaling 2,814 acres. WPC improved or restored more than 220 stream miles. WPC provided biodiversity data to government and industry, and worked with policymakers to add important environment protections to Marcellus Shale drilling practices.  ·During its 75thAnniversary year, Fallingwater, now under consideration as a World Heritage Site, welcomed more than 160,000 visitors. ·WPC’s Community Gardens and Greenspace program, which planted 135 gardens in 20 counties, was recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s “America's Great Outdoors program” for its outstanding work.The TreeVitalize Pittsburgh program planted 6,000 trees in Allegheny County neighborhoods and parks.  In 2012, WPC initiated a new three-year strategic plan to drive our work and advance our mission. Specifically: ·WPC will significantly accelerate land conservation in high-value areas to preserve high biodiversity properties. WPC’s Watershed Conservation program will improve water quality in priority watersheds. We will develop a water quality monitoring program for impacts associated with energy development. ·Fallingwater will expand educational programming to reach a broader audience and to increase the understanding of architecture and its relationship to the natural world. We will undertake site-wide assessment to determine accessibility issues and implement a plan to address any issues. ·The Gardens and Greenspace program will enhance Western Pennsylvania’s cities and towns by implementing high impact approaches to promote healthy environments and livable neighborhoods. We will establish a sustainable comprehensive urban forestry program and undertake highly visible greening projects to continue the shift toward sustainable practices and landscapes in dense urban settings. ·WPC will address the impact of Marcellus Shale Gas and other energy development on natural resources in Pennsylvania by advancing sound and responsible public policy,assessing and monitoring impacts, and informing our land protection practices to minimize adverse impacts to our land, water, wildlife, and natural areas.
